Chapter 1 - THE SIGNATURE

“GET AWAY FROM MY SON!”

Arthur Vance’s voice exploded through the marble foyer so violently that everyone in the house froze.

Maria Torres stood halfway down the staircase, one arm wrapped around eight-year-old Lucas. The boy was shaking against her side.

Across the room, Elena Vance slowly lowered the leather folder she had been trying to pull from Maria’s hands.

For three long seconds, nobody moved.

Arthur’s expensive suitcase hit the floor.

He had returned from London twelve hours early.

And apparently, twelve hours early was exactly soon enough.

“Elena,” he said, his voice low now. “Why is Lucas crying?”

His wife’s face changed instantly.

The rage disappeared.

In its place came a soft, wounded expression Arthur had seen a hundred times during their four-year marriage.

“Arthur, darling, thank God you’re home.”

She rushed toward him.

Arthur stepped back.

“Answer me.”

Maria felt Lucas tighten his grip on her blouse.

Elena noticed.

Her eyes sharpened.

“She frightened him,” Elena said.

Maria stared at her.

“What?”

Elena pointed directly at the nanny.

“She broke into my office. I caught her stealing confidential papers. When I confronted her, she grabbed Lucas and started filling his head with lies.”

“That’s not true!” Lucas suddenly cried.

Arthur turned toward his son.

Lucas rarely raised his voice.

The boy looked terrified.

“Elena told Maria she’d send her to jail,” Lucas whispered. “She said Maria should’ve stayed out of grown-up business.”

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“Lucas, sweetheart, you misunderstood.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“Enough,” Arthur said.

He looked at Maria.

“Tell me what happened.”

Maria didn’t answer immediately.

She glanced toward Elena.

Then toward the leather folder.

Arthur followed her eyes.

“Maria?”

Her fingers trembled as she handed it to him.

“Mr. Vance, please look at these legal documents.”

Elena lunged forward.

“Arthur, don’t!”

Arthur’s eyes snapped toward her.

That single word changed everything.

He opened the folder.

Inside were bank transfer authorizations, trust modification forms, corporate resolutions and several pages carrying his signature.

Arthur stopped breathing.

Maria watched the color drain from his face.

“Where did you get these?”

“Your wife’s office.”

“You broke into my private office!” Elena shouted.

“The door was open.”

“You stole confidential documents!”

“I went in because Lucas left his homework bag inside. These papers were on the floor beside the desk.”

Arthur barely seemed to hear them.

His eyes were locked on the last page.

A transfer authorization.

Twenty-eight million dollars.

Beneficiary: Vance Meridian Holdings.

Arthur’s family company.

Authorized by Arthur Vance.

Except Arthur had never seen it before.

He slowly touched the signature.

“That’s my name.”

Elena folded her arms.

“Exactly.”

Arthur looked at her.

“That’s not what I said.”

Silence filled the foyer.

He lifted the paper.

“This is my name.”

His eyes hardened.

“But this is not my signature.”

Lucas buried his face against Maria.

Elena went pale.

Arthur flipped to the next document.

Then another.

And another.

Every page authorized transfers from the Lucas Vance Irrevocable Family Trust.

A trust Arthur’s late first wife, Rachel, had helped establish before she died.

A trust Elena had absolutely no authority to touch.

Arthur looked up.

“What on earth is happening in my house?”

Elena forced a laugh.

“This is ridiculous. You’re tired. You just got off a nine-hour flight.”

“Answer the question.”

“Those documents were prepared for review.”

“Why?”

“For restructuring.”

“You cannot restructure Lucas’s trust.”

“I know that.”

“Then why does this move twenty-eight million dollars out of it?”

Elena’s voice sharpened.

“That account belongs to our family business!”

“No,” Maria said quietly.

Elena spun around.

Maria met her stare.

“That trust fund belongs solely to his son.”

“You keep your mouth shut.”

Arthur stepped between them.

“Stay away from my son right now, Elena.”

Her face collapsed in disbelief.

“You’d believe a nanny over your own wife?”

Arthur looked down at the papers again.

Then at Maria.

Then at Lucas, who was still shaking.

When he answered, every word landed like a hammer.

“Maria has far more integrity than you ever will if these papers are real.”

Elena stared at him.

Something cold appeared behind her eyes.

Arthur saw it.

And for the first time in four years, he wondered whether he had ever truly known the woman he married.

But Maria knew something Arthur didn’t.

Those papers were not the worst thing she had found in Elena’s office.

There had been another envelope.

A small white envelope hidden beneath the transfer documents.

Maria had slipped it into her apron before Elena caught her.

May you like

And written across the front were four words that still made her stomach turn.

AFTER ARTHUR IS GONE.
