Chapter 6 - The Family Smear Campaign Unleashed

Barbara Davis was a woman who treated social status in East Tennessee like a competitive sport. She was heavily coiffed, perpetually dressed in designer athletic wear, and carried a reputation for meddling in every single aspect of her son Brent’s marriage.
“Clara!” Barbara called out through the open window, not even bothering to step out onto the gravel. “What on earth is the meaning of this spectacle?”
I lowered the staple gun to my side and walked slowly toward the car, stopping three feet from her driver’s side door. “Good morning, Barbara. Can I help you with something?”
“You can start by explaining why my son, my daughter-in-law, and my two precious grandchildren spent the night crammed into a single dingy motel room because of your hysterics!” Barbara demanded, tapping her manicured nails impatiently against the steering wheel. “Naomi called me in tears at six this morning! She told me you had armed deputies draw weapons on them over a simple family misunderstanding!”
“Did Naomi also tell you that Brent used a crowbar to bust open my back door while I was two hundred miles away?” I asked, my voice calm, even, and ice-cold.
Barbara scoffed, waving her hand dismissively. “Oh, please! Brent was just trying to fix a sticky latch! You know how old houses settle! They were under the impression you had given them permission to move their non-essential items into the spare bedrooms while they transitioned between leases. Naomi is your niece! You raised her! You have plenty of room out here, Clara. What kind of bitter, cold-hearted woman turns away her own flesh and blood?”
“The kind of woman who values her peace and obeys property law,” I replied. “Brent and Naomi were not ‘transitioning.’ They were attempting to establish unlawful residency so they could force me into a civil eviction process.”
Barbara’s eyes narrowed into slits. “You are completely delusional. Brent is a respected professional! He doesn't need your dusty little cottage! Do you have any idea the damage you’ve caused to their family dynamic? Naomi has been on Facebook all morning explaining exactly what you did. People in town are talking, Clara. Our church group is already organizing a relief drive for them because their own aunt cast them out into the street!”
A dark, cold chuckle escaped my lips. “Is that what she did? Posted on Facebook?”
“Yes! And by noon, everyone in this county is going to know what kind of selfish, vindictive person you really are! You’ll be an outcast at the library, at the community center, everywhere! You need to fix this right now, Clara. Call Naomi, apologize for your overreaction, and let them have the second floor until Brent finds a permanent house. If you don't, I will personally make sure your name is ruined from here to Knoxville!”
I took half a step closer to the window, leaned down slightly, and looked Barbara directly in the eyes.
“Barbara, let me give you some free legal and personal advice,” I said, my voice dropping an octave into pure, razor-sharp authority. “I have four crystal-clear security videos saved on three separate hard drives. I have audio recordings of Brent plotting to manipulate Tennessee tenancy laws. I have footage of Naomi rifling through my cabinets and Brent hauling a crowbar through my foyer. If Naomi doesn't take down that social media post within the next sixty minutes, I will post every single second of that footage publicly, tag her, tag Brent’s employer, tag your church group, and file a formal defamation lawsuit against both of them in Blount County Circuit Court.”
Barbara’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Her confident sneer dissolved into genuine panic.
“Furthermore,” I continued, reaching into my jacket pocket and pulling out the folded copy of the Notice of Criminal Trespass, “this is a formal barring notice for your son and daughter-in-law. If they set one foot past that metal sign I just nailed to the post, they will be arrested immediately on site. And if you continue to harass me on my own property, Barbara, I will have the sheriff add your name to the warrant list before lunch.”
I dropped the legal document through the open window onto her lap.

“Have a safe drive back to Knoxville,” I said, turning my back on her and walking calmly up my driveway.
Behind me, I heard Barbara violently shift the sedan into reverse, the tires kicking up a shower of gravel as she sped away down Blackwood Ridge Road.
