Chapter 15 - The Only Woman Who Never Looked Away

One year later.

The summer sun was setting over the Atlantic Ocean, painting the sky in breathtaking hues of gold, crimson, and lavender.

We were sitting on the expansive stone terrace of our newly renovated coastal villa in southern Maine—our private sanctuary away from the hustle of the city headquarters.

Below the terrace, the gentle waves crashed rhythmically against the rocky shoreline.

Clara was down on the beach, running through the surf with our two golden retrievers, her laughter carrying up on the warm evening breeze.

I stood by the terrace railing, holding a glass of vintage red wine, watching the sunset.

My legs were completely healed. The scar on my lower back was nothing more than a faint silver line—a reminder of a battle won, not a defeat endured.

Soft footsteps sounded against the warm terracotta tiles behind me.

Two slender, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind, resting gently against my abdomen.

Tessa pressed her cheek between my shoulder blades.

“What are you thinking about, Mr. Corvino?” she asked softly.

I turned around within her embrace, wrapping my arms around her and pulling her close against my chest.

She was wearing a simple sundress, her face glowing in the golden twilight.

“I’m thinking about the morning you walked into my room with that rough washcloth,” I smiled, kissing the tip of her nose. “I was ready to give up. I thought the whole world had moved on.”

“I told you back then,” Tessa said, looking up into my eyes with that same fierce, unyielding love that had saved my soul. “Rent doesn't care if you're tired, and neither do I.”

We both laughed—a rich, joyful sound that echoed over the cliffs.

Then, Tessa took my right hand and gently placed it over her lower abdomen.

A soft, knowing smile curved her lips.

“And pretty soon,” she whispered, her eyes shining with tears of profound joy, “there will be three of us needing your strength.”

My heart stopped for a beat, then surged with an emotion so vast and overwhelming it took my breath away.

I dropped to both knees before my wife, wrapping my arms around her waist and pressing my face against her stomach, tears of absolute gratitude wetting the fabric of her dress.

From a paralyzed man left for dead in a darkened room to a man blessed with an unbreakable empire, a true love, and a new life on the horizon.

I looked up into the face of the woman who had washed my back when everyone else had abandoned me.

The woman who never looked away.

“I love you, Tessa Corvino,” I said.

“I love you, Vincent,” she replied, tangling her fingers in my hair as the sun dipped beneath the horizon. “Forever.”

THE END
