Chapter 6: Healing Scars
I left the FBI to dismantle the empire and rushed back to Mount Sinai Hospital.
When I opened the door to Room 412, the heavy, oppressive darkness that had haunted me for hours began to lift. Audrey was awake. The heavy sedatives had worn off. She was sitting up slightly, her bandaged arms resting on pillows.
Dr. Aris was sitting beside her, speaking in a low, gentle voice, explaining the nutritional recovery plan to ensure the baby received the nutrients Marissa had systematically denied them.
When Audrey saw me, her breath hitched. For a terrifying second, I thought she was going to recoil, conditioned by months of fear. But instead, her eyes filled with tears, and she reached out a gauze-wrapped hand toward me.
"Daniel," she whispered.
I crossed the room in three strides, falling into the chair beside her bed and burying my face gently against her shoulder. "I'm here. I'm right here."
"The doctor said..." Audrey’s voice trembled, breaking on a sob. "She said I wasn't dirty. She said the rash Marissa told me I had wasn't real. It was just dry skin from the winter air."
"It wasn't real," I affirmed fiercely, looking into her beautiful, tear-filled eyes. "They lied to you, Audrey. They tortured you to make you feel crazy so Victoria could take our child. But it's over. Victoria is in federal custody. Marissa took a plea deal and confessed to everything. They are never coming near you again."
Audrey let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension that had held her captive for months finally shattering. She began to weep, not the silent, terrified tears of a victim, but the loud, messy, profound tears of a survivor finally realizing she was safe.

I climbed carefully onto the edge of the hospital bed, wrapping my arms around her, holding her as she cried into my chest. I felt the baby kick strongly against my side, a powerful, defiant reminder of the life we were protecting.
We stayed like that for hours, the sterile hospital room feeling more like a home than the multi-million-dollar penthouse ever had.
