Chapter 9: The Repo Men

By Thursday, the collapse was total. Because Robert and Janet could not pay for fuel, their delivery fleet missed three days of prime shipping routes. Their two largest corporate clients canceled their contracts due to breach of service. Without the commercial credit line I had provided, the bank called in the master loan.
I drove past their warehouse on my way home from work. I pulled over across the street and rolled down the window. Three massive, heavy-duty tow trucks were backed into the loading docks. Men in high-visibility vests were hooking up the delivery vans. Robert was standing in the parking lot, screaming at the repo men, waving a clipboard. Janet was sitting on the curb, her head in her hands, watching the business they had spent twenty years building being hauled away piece by piece.
They had sacrificed everything to look like big shots for Carter. And now, they had absolutely nothing.
