Chapter 12 - The Federal Sentencing

Six months later, the federal courthouse in Savannah was packed to capacity for the final sentencing hearing of United States v. Richard and Beatrice Harrison.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored navy business suit, my ankle completely healed. Beside me sat General Michael Carter in his full Dress Blue uniform, his posture as commanding as ever.
On my other side sat Ethan, dressed in a clean, modest dark suit that he had purchased with his own earned wages. Over the last six months, Ethan had been promoted to Assistant Depot Manager at Fort Stewart, working eighty hours a week, attending weekly family counseling, and proving through every single action that he was committed to being a protector.
At the defense table sat Richard and Beatrice Harrison, wearing orange federal prison jumpsuits, shackled at the wrists and ankles.
Judge Arthur Pendelton adjusted his glasses, looking down from the bench with absolute sternness.
"Richard Harrison," Judge Pendelton proclaimed. "For your abuse of public trust, environmental extortion, and money laundering, you are hereby sentenced to fourteen years in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons."
Richard lowered his head, weeping silently.
"Beatrice Harrison," the judge continued, turning his gaze to my mother-in-law. "Your callous disregard for the law, your fraudulent use of family identities, and your systematic financial abuse of those under your roof demonstrate a profound lack of moral character. You are hereby sentenced to seven years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville, Alabama."
BANG!
The gavel struck the block.
As the federal marshals led Beatrice away in chains, she looked into the gallery. Her eyes swept past the reporters, past the former friends who had abandoned her, and landed on Ethan.
"Ethan!" Beatrice cried out, her voice cracked and desperate. "Tell them! Ethan, help your mother!"
Ethan looked at his mother—the woman who had controlled his entire life with guilt and venom.
Ethan reached over, took my hand firmly in his, and interlaced his fingers with mine in full view of the entire courtroom.

He didn't say a word. He simply held my hand, looking through his mother as if she were nothing more than a ghost of a past we had survived.
Beatrice let out a final, pathetic wail as the steel door closed behind her forever.
