Chapter 5 - The Desperate Ex-Fiancé at the Front Gates of an Estate He Never Knew Existed

By late afternoon, news of the hostile takeover of Caldwell Construction had sent shockwaves through the New York financial circles. The press was having a field day. Headlines flashed across Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal: CALDWELL CONSTRUCTION SEIZED IN SUDDEN DEFAULT BY WHITMORE HOLDINGS.
Andrew Caldwell found himself standing outside the towering wrought-iron security gates of the Whitmore Estate in Alpine, New Jersey.
For the past year, he had believed Emily lived in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Queens with a roommate. He had always assumed she came from a humble, struggling background. He had even patted himself on the back for being "charitable" enough to marry a working-class girl.
Now, as he stood before the massive limestone pillars, staring up the long, tree-lined cobblestone driveway toward a magnificent French chateau estate spanning over twenty acres, his stomach twisted in agonizing regret.
He pressed the security intercom repeatedly. "Emily! Emily, please, it’s Andrew! Open the gates! We need to talk!"
After ten agonizing minutes, the heavy iron gates slowly swung open. Andrew rushed inside, jogging up the driveway until he reached the grand stone courtyard.
The front door opened, and Emily stepped out onto the marble veranda. She was dressed in casual jeans and a soft cashmere sweater, her arms crossed, looking down at him with an expression of pure exhaustion and contempt.
"Emily!" Andrew cried, rushing toward the steps. "Thank God you let me in. Look, this whole thing has gotten completely out of hand. My mother is out of her mind—you know she’s always had anger issues! I had nothing to do with what she did!"
Emily held up a single hand, stopping him in his tracks.
"You had everything to do with it, Andrew," Emily said calmly. "When your mother insulted my mother's blindness, you said, 'Don't make a big deal out of it.' When your mother kicked my mother's cane, you held me back instead of helping her. And when she threw wine in her face, you didn't even check if my mother was okay. You told me to calm down."
"I was in shock!" Andrew pleaded, tears forming in his eyes. "I didn't know how to react! But I love you, Emily! I love you for you, not for your father’s billions! You know that!"
Emily let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "Do I, Andrew? When you thought I was poor, you treated my family like an embarrassment you had to tolerate. You let your mother treat us like trash because you thought we had no power to fight back. You only care now because your trust fund is gone, your father’s company is gone, and your mother’s country club memberships are being canceled."
"That’s not true!" Andrew sobbed, dropping to his knees on the cold cobblestones. "Emily, please... if we get married, this can all be fixed! We can merge the families! I will publicly apologize to your mother! I will make my mother apologize on her knees! Just tell your father to stop the foreclosure!"
"My father didn't destroy your family, Andrew," Emily said softly. "Your mother's arrogance and your cowardice destroyed your family. My father simply stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own actions."
Two burly private security guards in black suits stepped out from behind the estate doors.
"Get off our property, Andrew," Emily said, turning her back on him. "And if you ever come near me or my mother again, I will have a restraining order filed before you reach the end of the driveway."

"Emily! Emily, please!" Andrew screamed as the security guards firmly grabbed his arms, hauling him backward toward the gates. "You can't do this to me! Emily!"
The heavy oak doors clicked shut, locking Andrew out of the paradise he had thrown away for a moment of cowardly silence.
