Chapter 13 - The Sentence

When the jury filed back into the courtroom at two o'clock on Friday afternoon, the foreperson handed the verdict forms to the bailiff.

Judge Holbrook reviewed the documents, nodding slowly, before turning to the defense table.

"Defendants will rise for the reading of the verdict," the bailiff announced.

Julian stumbled to his feet, supported by his attorney. Margaret stood shaking, clutching the edge of the wooden table.

"On Count One, Grand Larceny in excess of one million dollars: Guilty," the foreperson read.

"On Count Two, Felony Identity Theft: Guilty."

"On Count Three, Criminal Child Neglect and Endangerment: Guilty."

"On Count Four, Multi-Year Wire Fraud: Guilty."

"On Count Five, Forgery of Legal Deeds: Guilty."

Down the line, on all twenty-four counts, the verdict was identical: Guilty.

Margaret collapsed back into her chair, letting out a dry, gasping sob. Julian buried his face in his shackled hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, pathetic weeping.

Judge Holbrook did not delay sentencing. He denied all motions for post-trial relief and addressed the defendants directly from the bench.

"In my thirty-two years on the bench," Judge Holbrook said, his voice ringing with cold, unyielding authority, "I have rarely encountered a level of calculated, sadistic cruelty equal to what has been proven in this courtroom. You, Margaret Carter, were entrusted with the care of a grieving, vulnerable child. Instead of protecting her, you treated your own granddaughter as an inconvenient servant while systematically plundering her father’s life savings to fund an obscene lifestyle of vanity and greed."

Judge Holbrook turned his blazing gaze toward Julian.

"And you, Julian Carter, are a parasitic coward who lived in luxury off the sweat of your brother’s hazardous labor while forcing a fifteen-year-old girl to sleep behind a furnace and starve. You have shown zero remorse, zero empathy, and zero human decency."

Judge Holbrook raised his gavel.

"Julian Carter, on the counts of Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, and Child Endangerment, I sentence you to twenty-two years in the Colorado Department of Corrections, with no possibility of parole for the first fifteen years."

Julian let out a strangled cry as the bailiffs immediately stepped behind him.

"Margaret Carter," Judge Holbrook continued, turning to the trembling woman. "Taking into account your age, but also the extraordinary betrayal of trust and systemic cruelty you inflicted upon a minor child, I sentence you to fourteen years at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility."

Judge Holbrook brought the heavy wooden gavel down with a sharp, resounding CRACK.

"Court is adjourned."

The bailiffs grabbed Julian and Margaret, leading them through the heavy metal side doors that led to the holding cells. As Margaret was pulled through the door, she looked back one last time at the gallery where Emily and I sat.

Emily didn't flinch. She didn't look away. She sat tall, her hand resting securely in mine, watching the woman who had tormented her disappear behind the steel door forever.
