Chapter 3 - THE CODE BENEATH THE SILK

The bullet hit the wet pavement inches from Isabella's heel.
Asphalt chipped against her bare ankles.
She dropped behind the stone retaining wall of the lower gate.
Another muffled crack tore through the downpour.
A round buried itself into the limestone above her head.
Dust and freezing water showered over her back.
Her hands scraped against wet moss and gravel.
"Down!"
A heavy body slammed into the mud beside her.
Marco.
He had stripped off his suit jacket, wearing only his shoulder rig and dark tactical shirt.
He held a suppressed semi-automatic pistol with both hands.
"Are you hit?" Marco shouted over the roar of the rain.
"No!" Isabella choked out, spitting water from her lips.
"Who was in that car?"
"I don't know," Marco said, leaning around the corner to return fire.
He fired two controlled shots into the treeline across the road.
A distant engine roared in the darkness.
Tires squealed against slick asphalt as the shooter’s vehicle fled down the winding private road.
Silence returned, broken only by the violent thunder over Lake Michigan.
Marco reached out and hauled Isabella to her feet.
His hands were coated in black muck.
"Dante is coming down the hill," Marco warned.
Headlights swept across the wet trees.
Dante’s customized armored Mercedes slid to a halt at the curb.
The driver’s door flew open before the vehicle even stopped moving.
Dante stepped out into the pouring rain without an umbrella.
His black suit was drenched in seconds.
His white shirt clung to his broad chest.
His jaw was set in iron fury.
He crossed the distance between them in four long strides.
He reached for Isabella’s shoulders.
"Don't touch me," she said.
Her voice had no volume, but it stopped him cold.
Dante’s hands hovered in the rain, trembling with suppressed adrenaline.
"Isabella, you were shot at," Dante breathed.
"On your land," she said, looking straight into his dark eyes.
"By your people."
"They are not my people," Dante snapped.
"You let them search my bag, Dante."
Her words cut through the storm louder than the gunfire.
"You stood in front of twenty-two people and weighed my dignity against your family's comfort."
"I was trying to clear you!"
"You were protecting yourself," she whispered.
"You were making sure nobody thought the Boss was weak for loving an outsider."
Dante flinched as if she had driven a blade between his ribs.
Marco stepped between them, holding out a small plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a spent shell casing recovered from the mud.
"Custom load," Marco said quietly to Dante.
"Nine-millimeter sub-sonic."
"Only one distributor in the state carries these."
Dante looked at the brass casing.
His face turned completely gray.
"Carlo's armory," Dante muttered.
"Not just Carlo's," Isabella said, opening her ruined handbag.
She reached deep into the side pocket where the sapphire had rested.
Her fingers tore at the inner seam.
A small, rectangular silver chip tumbled out into her wet palm.
It was smaller than a postage stamp.
An encrypted GPS beacon with a military serial number.
"This wasn't planted twenty minutes ago during coffee," Isabella said, holding the chip under Dante's face.
"The adhesive is dry."
"It has been inside my purse for three days."
"They didn't just frame me, Dante."
"They were tracking me so they could kill me the second I walked out your door."
Dante stared at the flashing red LED on the tiny chip.
The realization hit him like a physical blow.
His family had not staged an accusation to embarrass her.
They had staged an execution.
Suddenly, Marco’s radio crackled with urgent static.
A guard's voice sounded panicked from the estate upstairs:
"Mr. Moretti! The east vault has been breached!"
May you like
"Aunt Sophia is unconscious in the study!"
"And Carlo just left through the north gate with two armed transports!"
