Chapter 14 - Julian's Vow Under the Magnolia Trees

That evening, Julian drove Clara out to the private Vance family estate on Kiawah Island—a breathtaking oceanfront sanctuary surrounded by ancient live oaks, blooming tea olives, and private dunes overlooking the rolling Atlantic surf.
The sun was setting in a blaze of gold, crimson, and deep lavender across the water.
Julian led Clara along a private wooden boardwalk that wound through the sea oats toward a secluded bluff overlooking the beach. The entire path was illuminated by hundreds of soft, glowing glass lanterns hanging from the branches of the magnificent live oaks.
At the center of the bluff stood a circular gazebo draped in white silk and cascading white roses—Clara’s favorite flowers.
Clara stopped, her hand over her heart, her breath catching in her throat. "Julian... what is all this?"
Julian turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his. His slate-gray eyes were shining with an emotion so deep, so profound, it made Clara’s knees feel weak.
"Clara," Julian began, his voice trembling with rare, beautiful vulnerability. "Two years ago, you walked out of a life that made you feel small, unloved, and invisible. For two years, I have had the greatest privilege of my life: watching you reclaim your power, your brilliance, and your joy."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
He dropped gracefully to one knee on the weathered wood of the boardwalk, looking up at her with complete, unreserved devotion.
He opened the box.
Inside rested a magnificent, custom-cut emerald ring, surrounded by a delicate halo of antique diamonds—the green stone reflecting the exact color of the dress she had worn the day she walked into the boardroom to take back her life.
"You are the strongest, most extraordinary woman I have ever known," Julian said, his eyes locked onto hers. "I don't want to just share an empire with you, Clara. I want to share every sunrise, every quiet evening, every joy, and every trial that life brings our way. I promise to cherish your mind, protect your heart, and love you with everything I have for the rest of my days."
He held his breath, his hands steady as he looked up at her. "Clara Sterling... will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?"
Clara’s vision blurred with tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.
There was no fear. There was no hesitation. There was no shadow of the past.
She stepped forward, dropping to her knees on the boardwalk beside him, wrapping her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.
"Yes," she whispered, her voice overflowing with joy. "A thousand times, yes."
Julian let out a triumphant, breathless laugh, wrapping his strong arms around her waist and lifting her up into the ocean breeze as the waves crashed against the sand below.

He slid the emerald ring onto her finger—a perfect fit.
When his lips met hers under the canopy of ancient magnolia trees and the canopy of stars, Clara knew with absolute, unshakable certainty that she had finally come home.
