Chapter 14 - The Final Settlement That Stripped Him Bare

Six months after the courthouse showdown, Marcus Vance called me into his office for our final administrative sign-off.
"Elena, Julian's bankruptcy proceedings have concluded," Marcus said, laying a single sheet of paper on his desk. "Chapter 7 liquidation. His debts were so catastrophic, and his lack of income so severe, that the bankruptcy trustee auctioned off every remaining asset he possessed."
"What’s left of him, Marcus?" I asked, genuinely curious.
"He works as an hourly customer service associate at a suburban call center," Marcus said, shaking his head slightly. "Making eighteen dollars an hour answering warranty complaints. He lives in a shared basement apartment twenty miles outside the city, and forty percent of his disposable income is automatically garnished to pay down his non-dischargeable tax liens and court sanctions."
Marcus paused, looking at me with a proud smile. "He will be paying those court sanctions to your trust for the next twelve years. Every single month, when he receives his tiny paycheck, sixty-five dollars will be transferred directly to you—a permanent, monthly reminder of what happens when you underestimate the woman who fed you."
I looked down at the bankruptcy closure document. There was no anger left in my heart. No desire for further revenge. Julian had carved his own grave with his arrogance, and life had simply pushed him into it.
"Thank you, Marcus," I said, signing the final document with a steady, elegant stroke of my fountain pen. "For everything."
"It was an honor, Elena," Marcus replied, standing up to shake my hand. "You didn't just win a case. You set a masterclass in how to dismantle a narcissist with pure class and legal precision."
As I walked out of Marcus’s office building into the warm spring sunshine, my phone buzzed with an incoming text message from Thomas.

Land in two hours. Can't wait to see you tonight. I found that quiet little jazz place you mentioned.
I smiled, slipping my phone into my leather purse, and walked down the avenue with my head held high.
