Chapter 10 - Tessa’s Masks Smashed to Pieces

The Dallas County Criminal Justice Center was besieged by hundreds of reporters, camera crews, and protestors on the morning of the preliminary hearing.

Inside the maximum-security courtroom, Reid Kessler sat at the defense table dressed in an ill-fitting orange inmate jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to his waist chain. His hair was greasy, his face hollow and covered in uneven stubble.

Beside him sat Tessa Langley, also in orange prison garb, weeping silently into her cuffed hands, stripped of her designer cashmere, her diamond earrings, and her manicured facade.

At the second defense table sat Marjorie Kessler, wearing a cheap black dress, her face buried in a handkerchief as she avoided looking at the gallery packed with former social peers who had come to witness their total humiliation.

“All rise!” the bailiff called out.

Judge William Hawthorne took the bench, adjusting his glasses as he surveyed the chaotic courtroom. “Be seated. We are here for preliminary motions and bail review in the matter of The State of Texas v. Reid Kessler, Tessa Langley, and Marjorie Kessler.”

The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

The entire gallery went dead silent. Reporters scrambled to turn their lenses toward the center aisle.

Walking into the courtroom was Audrey Bellamy.

I wore a tailored midnight-blue power suit from a renowned Parisian atelier, my posture immaculate, my chin held high. Beside me walked Warren Bellamy, his silver cane clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor, flanked by four Bellamy security directors and a team of top-tier litigators.

There was no wheelchair. There was no bowed head. There was only absolute, untouchable poise.

Reid’s head snapped toward the aisle. When his eyes met mine, his jaw dropped in utter, paralyzed shock.

He had never seen me look like this.

He had only known the quiet Audrey who wore plain cotton dresses and kept her gaze lowered. He was looking, for the very first time, at the true heir of the Bellamy dynasty.

“Audrey...” Reid croaked, trying to stand up, but the bailiff immediately pushed him back into his chair. “Audrey, please!”

I didn't even acknowledge his existence. I walked gracefully past the defense table, taking my seat in the front row of the executive gallery reserved for the victim and corporate intervenors.

Prosecutor Victoria Vance stepped forward to the podium.

“Your Honor,” Victoria began with razor-sharp precision, “we present to the court supplemental evidence seized from Miss Langley’s offshore accounts in the Cook Islands, as well as decrypted communications between Mr. Kessler and his private security personnel.”

Victoria placed a thick binder before the judge.

“These records prove beyond any doubt that Miss Langley orchestrated the fraudulent fall on the evening of October 14th with the express purpose of manufacturing a domestic assault claim. Furthermore, audio recordings recovered from the defendant’s private vehicle confirm that Mr. Kessler explicitly ordered his security team to inflict maximum physical harm on Mrs. Bellamy to compel her into signing a predatory forty-million-dollar non-disclosure agreement.”

Tessa broke down into loud, desperate wailing. “It was Reid’s idea! He told me he wanted her gone! He told me he was tired of her!”

“You lying bitch!” Reid roared, struggling against his metal chains as two armed bailiffs pushed him down onto the table. “You planned the whole thing! You stole fourteen million dollars from my company!”

“Silence in this courtroom!” Judge Hawthorne banged his gavel with thunderous fury. “One more outburst from either defendant and you will be removed to the holding cells!”

Judge Hawthorne reviewed the evidence files for five tense minutes. When he looked up, his expression was carved from solid stone.

“The court finds overwhelming probable cause on all counts,” Judge Hawthorne declared. “Given the severe nature of the violent physical injuries inflicted upon the victim, the extensive evidence of corporate fraud, and the documented attempts to transfer millions in stolen capital offshore, bail is hereby DENIED for Reid Kessler and Tessa Langley.”

He slammed the gavel down.

“Defendants will remain in custody at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center pending trial.”

As the bailiffs dragged Reid and Tessa toward the holding cell doors, Reid twisted his body violently, screaming my name through the echoing chamber.

“Audrey! Look at me! I loved you! Audrey, please don’t do this to me! You’re my wife!”

I turned my head slowly, meeting his frantic, terrified eyes for one final second.

My gaze was completely calm. Completely empty.

May you like

“You said it yourself, Reid,” I said softly, my voice carrying clearly over the murmurs of the courtroom. “I am worth five million per rib. And you cannot afford me.”

The heavy steel holding-cell door slammed shut behind him with a final, echoing crash.
