Chapter 3 - The Architecture of Murder

The silence that blanketed the ballroom was so heavy you could hear the crackle of the embers in the hearth. Arthur Hensley took the laminated schematic from my hand, his reading glasses trembling as he scanned the technical diagrams, the red arrows marking the ventilation shafts, and the corporate stamp at the bottom.
“This is our company’s internal engineering survey,” Hensley said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “This was commissioned three weeks ago under the guise of an HVAC inspection. Matthias... what is this?”
Fiona made a sudden movement toward the terrace doors, but one of Agent Vance’s plainclothes officers stepped smoothly into her path. “Stay right where you are, Ms. Vale. Nobody leaves this room until our hazmat and safety teams clear the lower levels.”
“This is an outrage!” Fiona screeched, dropping her poised public relations facade. “I am an independent contractor! I have nothing to do with their family madness!”
“Independent contractor?” David Ward laughed bitterly. “Is that what they call the primary beneficiary of the St. Kitts shell corporation that was set up to collect forty million dollars in casualty insurance? Because your electronic signature is on every single wire transfer, Fiona. Along with Matthias’s private cryptographic key.”
Matthias looked around the room like a cornered animal. His parents, the board members, the very people whose approval he had spent his entire life desperately seeking, were backing away from him as if he were carrying the plague.
“Serena,” Matthias said, turning to me with eyes wild with desperation. He took a step toward me, reaching out his hands. “Serena, listen to me. You don't understand the pressures I was under. The Hensley deal was going to collapse. The firm was overleveraged by two hundred million dollars. If the merger failed, we were going to lose everything. The house, the trust funds, our future... our baby’s future!”
“Do not use our daughter as a shield for your greed,” I said, every word laced with ice. “You didn't do this to save our family. You did this because you embezzled eighty million dollars from David’s accounts before he disappeared, and when you realized the federal auditors were closing in, you decided to burn the evidence, collect the insurance, and fly to South America with your mistress while leaving sixty people—including your pregnant wife—to burn in a 'tragic holiday accident.'”
Eleanor Dre staggered backward, collapsing into an antique armchair. “Matthias... tell me this isn't true. Tell me you didn't touch the family trust.”
“The family trust is gone, Mother!” Matthias snapped, completely losing his composure. The mask of the polished Greenwich heir cracked wide open, revealing the bitter, hollow creature underneath. “It’s been gone for six months! Father bled it dry with bad European investments, and David was going to report us to the SEC! What choice did I have?”
“You had the choice to be a human being,” David Ward said quietly. “Instead, you sabotaged the brakes on my car in the Alps. You thought I died in that ravine, didn't you? You didn't realize the Swiss rescue team pulled me out before the car exploded.”
Just then, the double doors leading from the basement stairs burst open. A team of four tactical firefighters in heavy gear, accompanied by a bomb disposal specialist, walked into the foyer carrying a series of electronic sensors and a severed timing mechanism wired to a commercial gas valve.
The lead firefighter nodded grimly to Agent Vance. “House is secured, Marcus. We bypassed the remote detonator on the main gas main five minutes before it was armed. If that spark had hit at midnight with the furnace kicking on, the entire east wing would have leveled in three seconds.”
Screams erupted from the socialites. Glasses dropped. Women wept openly as the reality of how close they had come to death washed over the room.

Matthias sank against the banister, his face the color of wet chalk.
“Matthias Dre,” Agent Vance announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit corporate arson, wire fraud, securities fraud, and the attempted assassination of David Ward.”
