Chapter 9 - The Fake Pregnancy and the Smear Campaign

Even with Ethan in county custody awaiting his bail hearing, Patricia Campbell was not going down without a vicious, desperate fight.

On Saturday morning, I woke up to an explosion of text messages and notifications from friends, distant relatives, and church members. Patricia had taken to social media, launching a toxic, slanderous public campaign across several local community groups and Facebook pages.

She had posted a series of dramatic, tear-filled paragraphs claiming that I was an “unfeeling, ruthless heiress” who had kicked her grieving husband out onto the street immediately after her father’s death. She claimed that Ethan had sacrificed his entire career to care for Arthur Vance during his final months, and that I was fabricating financial accusations out of pure greed to avoid sharing my father’s millions.

To make matters worse, Patricia added a monstrous, manufactured lie at the end of her post:

“Claire has locked my heartbroken son in jail while refusing to acknowledge that she is abandoning our family in our darkest hour. To make matters even more tragic, Ethan’s private consulting associate, Vanessa, is currently carrying Ethan’s unborn child—a child Claire is trying to starve out of its rightful family inheritance!”

The post had hundreds of shares, with comments from outraged locals who only knew the surface-level story.

“How heartless can someone be?” one comment read.

“Arthur Vance would roll over in his grave if he saw his daughter acting like this,” wrote another.

My phone rang. It was Martin Hale.

“Claire, have you seen Patricia’s social media posts?” Martin asked, his voice bristling with professional indignation.

“I just saw them,” I replied, my hands remarkably steady. “She’s trying to claim Vanessa is pregnant and that I’m cutting off a baby’s inheritance.”

“It’s a classic, desperate smear tactic designed to poison the local jury pool and pressure us into a settlement,” Martin said. “Defamation per se, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and witness tampering. We don't just respond, Claire—we drop the receipts.”

“Do it,” I said. “Post everything we’re legally allowed to disclose.”

Within two hours, Martin Hale’s law firm released an official, publicly accessible press release and court filing notification on their firm’s portal, linked directly into the community groups where Patricia had spread her lies.

The release contained zero emotional commentary. It simply contained four unassailable public records:

The Sworn Confession of Notary Public Thomas Wright, admitting Ethan paid him a cash bribe to forge Claire Vance’s name on a $350,000 second mortgage.

The Forensic Bank Ledger, showing $120,000 of stolen funds wired directly to Patricia Campbell to pay off her personal IRS tax liens.

The Text Logs between Ethan and Patricia, showing them celebrating the forged loan while Arthur Vance was in hospice.

An Official Statement from Vanessa Sterling’s Attorney, confirming that Vanessa was not pregnant, that she had been completely deceived by Ethan Campbell regarding his marital and financial status, and that she was cooperating fully as a witness for the prosecution.

The internet’s reaction was instantaneous and brutal.

The public comments that had previously condemned me reversed course with hurricane force.

“My God, the mother-in-law was in on the theft the whole time!”

“Patricia Campbell used stolen money to pay her country club dues while Arthur Vance was dying!”

“Lock them both up!”

By 4:00 PM, Patricia had frantically deleted her entire social media profile. The luxury real-estate agency representing the Meadowbrook property publicly announced that Patricia Campbell’s purchase application had been permanently rejected due to suspected fraudulent funds.

The country club where Patricia had spent the last five years putting on airs quietly revoked her membership, citing ethical violations and outstanding unpaid balances.

Patricia had thought she could use public shame as a weapon against me. Instead, she had held up a mirror to her own corruption, ensuring that neither she nor her son would ever be able to show their faces in our town again.
