Chapter 9 - The Mother-in-Law's Shameless Confrontation

Two weeks after Leo’s birth, the morning sun bathed the Upper East Side in brilliant gold.
I arrived at the prestigious Sterling Children’s Medical Center for Leo’s first comprehensive pediatric checkup. Dressed in an elegant beige trench coat and dark oversized sunglasses, I pushed a state-of-the-art baby stroller through the private medical pavilion, flanked discreetly by two plainclothes security officers.
Leo was thriving. The pediatrician had just confirmed that he was in the ninety-fifth percentile for height and weight, perfectly healthy, alert, and growing stronger by the day.
As we stepped out of the medical building’s private elevator into the marble ground-floor lobby, a sudden commotion erupted near the revolving glass doors.
"There she is! That’s the monster who destroyed my family!"
A shrill, hysterical screech echoed through the polished lobby, causing dozens of affluent patients, nurses, and doctors to stop in their tracks.
Lunging past the reception desk was Selina Carter.
She looked completely unhinged. The expensive blowout she usually maintained had collapsed into a rat’s nest of frizzy graying hair. Her once-pristine designer trench coat was wrinkled and stained with coffee, and her eyes were bloodshot with manic rage. Behind her, looking terrified and deeply embarrassed, was Chloe, wearing dirty sweatpants and hiding her face behind a baseball cap.
Before Selina could get within ten feet of me, my two security officers stepped forward, instantly forming an impenetrable physical wall between her and the stroller.
"Step back, ma'am," Officer Harris commanded in a low, thunderous voice.
"Get out of my way, you hired goons!" Selina shrieked, clawing at the officer's lapel. "Phoebe! You look at me! You look at what you’ve done to us!"
I stopped. I gently pulled the stroller back behind me, ensuring Leo was completely shielded, then took off my sunglasses and looked at the pathetic, broken woman standing before me.
"Selina," I said, my voice eerily calm and clear. "You are violating a court-mandated five-hundred-yard restraining order. If you take one more step, you will be arrested on the spot."
"I don't care about your bogus restraining orders!" Selina screamed, her voice cracking as saliva flecked from her lips. "Look at my daughter! Look at what you did to Chloe's business! Look at where we are living! We are staying in a rat-infested motel room while you parade around the Upper East Side in designer clothes!"
Several patients pulled out their smartphones, discreetly recording the entire unhinged spectacle.
"You stole our money!" Selina ranted, pointing a trembling, un-manicured finger at my face. "You set Rowan up! You knew he was an ambitious young man, and you used your father's power to trap him! You owe us twenty million dollars in compensation! You owe my son his rightful half of your family trust!"
I looked at her, feeling neither anger nor fear—only an overwhelming sense of pity for a woman whose entire existence was built on hollow, parasitic entitlement.
"Selina," I said, projecting my voice so that every single person in the lobby could hear clearly. "When I was in active labor on the floor of St. Jude's Hospital, begging my husband to come help me, you laughed into the phone. You told Rowan that 'women drop babies in fields' and that your birthday cake was more important than the life of your grandson."
The lobby fell into an appalled, breathless silence. Several mothers standing near the pharmacy gasped in horror, glaring at Selina with undisguised disgust.
"You didn't care if I lived or died," I continued, taking a step forward while my security officers held the perimeter. "You didn't care about this baby. You only cared about Cartier watches, Tribeca penthouses, and leeching off anyone foolish enough to let you. You were never a mother, Selina. You were a predator."
At that moment, four uniformed NYPD officers strode through the revolving glass doors, their tasers and handcuffs gleaming on their utility belts.
"Selina Carter?" the lead officer called out, marching directly toward her. "You are under arrest for felony violation of an active order of protection, criminal harassment, and disorderly conduct."
"No! Get your filthy hands off me!" Selina shrieked as the officers swiftly grabbed her arms, twisting them behind her back and clicking the steel handcuffs around her wrists. "Phoebe! Tell them to stop! Rowan will kill you for this! You will pay for this, you ungrateful little witch!"

The officers dragged Selina kicking and screaming through the revolving doors into the back of a waiting NYPD cruiser, while Chloe covered her face with her hoodie and ran out onto the avenue to escape the flashing smartphone cameras.
I turned back to the stroller, adjusted the soft cashmere blanket over Leo, put my sunglasses back on, and walked calmly out into the sunshine.
