Chapter 6 - The Woman with Emily’s Eyes

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity.
Helen wasn't just pocketing the six-thousand-dollar monthly grocery and nutrition budget. That was pocket change to someone like her. She was orchestrating a massive, legally airtight custodial coup.
If the girls were diagnosed with severe failure to thrive under my roof, and Helen presented her carefully curated "records"—showing that despite her best efforts, the children were declining under my neglect—she could file for emergency guardianship under Tennessee state law, citing Emily's private trust stipulations.
With me discredited or tied up in criminal neglect investigations, Helen Dawson would become the sole trustee of Emily’s twenty-million-dollar estate fund, collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars in administrator fees every year while keeping my daughters locked in a private medical facility.
"How did you get onto the estate?" I asked Sarah, my mind racing through every security protocol I had paid Calvin to install.
"Emily gave me an old service gate key card before she passed," Sarah said, pulling a worn plastic card from her pocket. "She kept it hidden in her jewelry box. She told me there was an old drainage culvert behind the north greenhouse that bypassed the infrared ground sensors. For the past six weeks, every night at 11:30 PM, I crawled through that pipe."
"You risked prison every single night," I said, staring at her in awe.
"I loved Emily," Sarah said softly, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. "She was the kindest woman I ever cared for. When she was sick, she didn't care about the pain; she only wept for the little girls she was leaving behind. I couldn't sit in this room and eat while I knew those two innocent babies were slowly dying behind reinforced glass."
I reached out and took Sarah’s hands in mine. They were rough, scarred from harsh cleaning chemicals, but they were the hands of an angel who had saved my family from the brink of destruction.
"You're not going back to this motel, Sarah," I said firmly. "And you're not sneaking through drainage pipes anymore."

"Nathan, what are you going to do?" Calvin asked from the door. "If we hit Helen now, we might get her on child endangerment, but she has high-priced attorneys on retainer. If her dirty doctor destroys the medical files, she could walk on bail and drag this through family court for years while your daughters suffer."
"We aren't just going to arrest her," I replied, standing up straight, my voice cold as steel. "We are going to destroy every single person involved in this conspiracy. We're going to catch Helen Dawson with her hands around the knife."
