Chapter 14 - Restitution and Healing

Six months later, the transformation of the Vance Estate was complete.
The thousands of acres of land that Charles Vance had preserved were officially designated as a permanent environmental and agricultural conservancy, protected by federal law from predatory corporate development forever.
A central portion of the land was converted into the Eleanor Vance Community Farm and Wellness Center, where local families could grow organic produce, access free mental health counseling, and find holistic medical support.
For the first time in my life, I woke up every morning not with dread or anxiety, but with purpose, joy, and profound gratitude.
I moved into a charming, restored stone cottage on the Vance Estate, surrounded by wildflower gardens and ancient oak trees. My days were spent managing the charitable foundation, working alongside Arthur Sterling to allocate grant funding, and spending weekends with Julian and my extended Vance cousins, learning the stories and traditions of the family I was denied for so long.
One sunny afternoon, a courier delivered a registered package from the Virginia Department of Corrections.
Inside was a single, handwritten letter from Susan, sent from the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women.
I opened the envelope and read the trembling, desperate handwriting:
“Chloe, please. I am begging for your mercy. The prison conditions are unbearable. Tyler won't speak to me, and Richard’s creditors are suing me for what little I have left. You have tens of millions of dollars. If you could just deposit five hundred dollars a month into my prison commissary account, I will swear on my life to never mention your name again. Have pity on your mother’s family.”
I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel triumph.

I simply folded the letter, walked over to the stone fireplace, and dropped it into the roaring embers. I watched the paper curl, turn black, and vanish into smoke—just like the lies she had spun for twenty years.
True healing, I realized, wasn't about seeking revenge against those who hurt you. True healing was reaching the point where their existence had zero power over your peace.
