Chapter 14 - THE SOUND OF THE SEA

They drove north along the coastal highway to Julian’s private estate on Cape Ann.

The house sat on a high granite bluff overlooking the wild, churning waters of the North Atlantic.

Built of native stone and dark timber, it looked like part of the cliff itself, weathered by a century of ocean storms.

The living room had thirty-foot cathedral ceilings of rough-hewn pine.

A massive stone fireplace burned with birch logs, filling the room with the sweet scent of woodsmoke.

Outside, the snow had stopped.

The winter sky had cleared to a deep, crystalline sapphire blue.

Ren sat on the deep sofa, wrapped in a heavy wool throw.

Julian had set up an old analog tape deck on the coffee table.

He pressed the play button.

The tape hissed softly with magnetic static.

Then, a voice filled the room.

Warm.

Clear.

Unmistakably her mother's voice.

"Renny, my sweet girl.

If you are hearing this, you are grown.

You are probably angry.

You probably wonder why I lived in that quiet house with a man who had darkness in his eyes.

I did it for you, my darling.

I wanted you to have soccer games, library books, and Sunday dinners without armed men standing at the door.

I wanted you to know what peace felt like before the world showed you its teeth.

Never be ashamed of loving someone, Ren.

Even when they hurt you.

Loving someone is the only real power we have in this life.

Arthur thought power was money and fear.

He was wrong.

Power is knowing who you are when everything around you burns.

Be brave, my girl.

Live a life that is entirely yours.

I love you.

Always.

Mom."

The tape ended with a soft, mechanical click.

The room fell into silence.

Only the sound of the ocean wind howling against the granite cliff remained.

Ren wept.

She did not weep with grief.

She wept with relief.

The heavy armor she had worn since the morning of her wedding—the cold, defensive shell that had kept her upright—finally melted away.

Julian sat beside her.

He pulled her into his arms, wrapping his strong, steady frame around her trembling shoulders.

Ren pressed her face into his neck, holding onto his wool coat with both hands.

Julian held her silently as the sun dipped below the western horizon, painting the snowy cliffs in shades of violet and gold.

He did not offer empty reassurances.

He did not tell her everything would be fine.

He simply remained there.

An anchor in the storm.

When her tears finally slowed, Ren lifted her head.

Julian looked down at her, his thumb gently wiping away the wet tracks on her cheeks.

"She was right, Ren," Julian whispered.

"You have more power than any man who ever tried to control you."

Ren looked into his gray eyes.

The darkness that had lived in them was gone, replaced by a deep, protective tenderness.

"I spent three years trying to save Derek," Ren said softly.

"I thought that was love."

"It was duty, Ren," Julian said.

"Love doesn't ask you to make excuses."

"Love doesn't hide in a linen closet."

Julian reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small, simple ring.

Not syndicate diamonds.

Not stolen gold.

A band of polished sea glass set in clean, brushed platinum.

"I found this on the beach below the cliff yesterday," Julian said.

His voice was thick with an emotion he had never shown to another human being.

"I took it to the village jeweler in Rockport."

"It's not an invoice, Ren."

"It's not an investment."

"It's a promise."

Julian held the ring between his fingers.

"Stay with me."

"Not because you owe me."

"Not because you're running from your father."

"Stay with me because you want to."

Ren looked at the sea glass ring.

It was green.

The color of the ocean after a summer storm.

Clean.

Unbroken.

She extended her left hand.

"Put it on my finger, Julian Thorne," she said.

His hands were steady as he slipped the ring onto her finger.

It fit perfectly.

May you like

Ren leaned forward and kissed him.

The kiss was slow, deep, filled with the warmth of the fire and the promise of a life that was finally, truly her own.
