Guests slowly began leaving the hall.
Some stopped beside Chloe to tell her how brave she was.
Others looked at Rachel with disappointment.
She finally walked toward me.
"I made one mistake."
"Don't throw everything away."
I shook my head.
"This wasn't one mistake."
"It was a choice."
"You looked at my daughter..."
"...and decided she was a problem."
Rachel began crying.
"I can change."
"Maybe."
"But I won't ask my daughter to gamble her childhood while you figure out whether she's welcome in your life."
Her father approached quietly.
He placed a hand on her shoulder.
Then looked at me.
"I owe you an apology."
"You don't."
I answered gently.
"The only person who deserves one..."
I looked down at Chloe.
"...is her."
Rachel opened her mouth.
No words came.
Because there was nothing she could say that would erase what her actions had already revealed.
