Chapter 7 - Claire’s Office Ambush

Two days after Jeff’s accounts were frozen, Claire decided to launch her final, desperate counterattack.

At 11:30 AM, while I was leading a sprint planning meeting in the glass-walled conference room of our corporate headquarters, a loud commotion erupted in the reception lobby.

Claire had bypassed the first-floor security desk by claiming she was delivering emergency medical supplies to an employee.

She marched straight onto the executive floor wearing an oversized trench coat, her hair unkempt, holding her four-year-old son Toby by the hand.

“Adam!” Claire shrieked, pushing past two junior analysts. “Come out here and look at your nephew! Look at what you’re doing to this innocent child!”

The entire thirty-person engineering department stopped working. Monitors went quiet.

I stepped out of the conference room, my expression calm, unreadable, and absolute.

“Claire,” I said, keeping my voice at a low, measured volume. “Step into the private annex.”

“No!” she screamed, pulling Toby toward her like a human shield. “Everyone in this building needs to know what kind of monster they work with! You had me arrested! You froze our mother’s bank accounts! You’re leaving your own nephew without food or school because your fragile little ego couldn't handle a joke!”

Little Toby began crying, terrified by his mother’s shouting.

Before I could speak, the heavy walnut door of the corner executive office opened.

Vincent Sterling—the CEO of our firm, a towering sixty-year-old industry titan who was also my late father’s first cousin—stepped out into the hallway.

Vincent looked at Claire. Then he looked at the crying child. Then he looked at the two armed building security guards who had just arrived via the service elevator.

“Claire,” Vincent said, his deep, commanding voice cutting through her hysteria like a blade.

Claire blinked, suddenly recognizing the billionaire head of the family firm. “Uncle Vincent… you have to talk to Adam! He’s destroying the family!”

“No, Claire,” Vincent said coldly. “You destroyed this family the moment you brought a four-year-old boy into a corporate defense facility to stage an emotional extortion scheme.”

Vincent turned to the security team.

“Remove this woman from the building immediately. File a formal criminal trespass report with the Austin Police Department. And if she ever steps foot on this property again, have her remanded directly to county jail for violating her deferred adjudication agreement.”

Claire gasped in utter horror as the guards firmly took her by the elbows, guiding her toward the elevator bank while Toby sobbed.

Vincent turned to me, placing a heavy, supportive hand on my shoulder.

“Go home for the day, Adam,” Vincent said gently. “And don't ever apologize for excising a cancer from your life.”
