Chapter 6 - The Groom Discovers the Lie

While Jonah and I sat by the hearth in Gladwyne, four miles away at the Ritz-Carlton in Center City Philadelphia, Nathaniel Reyes was pacing the floor of a luxury suite in his unbuttoned tuxedo shirt.

His phone sat on the glass coffee table, buzzing continuously with frantic text messages and missed calls from Camille and Evelyn.

Nathaniel, please answer. We can explain everything.

It was a private family misunderstanding from years ago.

You are ruining our wedding night over nothing!

Nathaniel didn't answer. He stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering city lights, his jaw clenched in absolute disgust.

The suite door buzzed.

Nathaniel walked over and pulled it open, expecting room service. Instead, Camille stood in the hallway, still wearing her crumpled silk wedding dress, a designer trench coat thrown over her shoulders. Her eyes were swollen, her dark mascara streaked down her cheeks, and her hands were trembling violently.

"Nathaniel... please," she sobbed, pushing past him into the room before he could close the door. "You can't do this to me. You left our own reception. Do you have any idea how humiliating that was?!"

Nathaniel shut the door slowly, leaning his back against it, folding his arms. His voice was terrifyingly calm.

"You told me your sister died of childhood leukemia when you were twelve, Camille."

Camille stopped in the middle of the room, flinching as if the temperature had dropped below freezing.

"I... I had to," she stammered, clutching her designer handbag against her stomach. "You don't understand what she did to our family, Nathaniel! She was rebellious, she betrayed everything my parents built, she dropped out of pre-med to become a low-level aide! She dragged our family name through the mud!"

"She's the CEO of Northlight Healthcare, Camille," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into cold, lethal precision. "She funded my fellowship. She paid off my medical school debt. Her nurses kept my father alive long enough for him to see me match into my surgical residency!"

"She did that with dirty money!" Camille screamed, her composure entirely shattering. "She built some glorified babysitting company for old people! She did it just to spite us! My mother and father built a legacy of real surgical prestige, and Meredith threw it away because she was too weak to pass the MCATs!"

Nathaniel walked slowly over to the coffee table, picked up his drink, and looked at his bride with a coldness that made Camille take a step back.

"Do you want to know what Dr. Coulson told me during my fellowship interview, Camille?"

Camille blinked, sniffing hard. "What?"

"He told me that Meredith didn't fail the MCATs. She scored in the 99th percentile. She chose nursing and home care because she watched your father and grandfather operate on dying patients, collect fifty-thousand-dollar cash retainers, and then abandon those patients to die in understaffed nursing homes the second the insurance ran out."

Camille’s face went completely bloodless. "That's a lie..."

"Your grandmother, Adele Marsh... she was the only one who had the courage to call your father out on his greed," Nathaniel continued, his voice shaking with righteous fury. "And when she had her stroke, your mother locked her away in an isolation ward and banned Meredith from seeing her on her deathbed."

"She was protecting the family reputation!" Camille shrieked.

"No, Camille," Nathaniel whispered, shaking his head with profound pity. "She was protecting her ego. And you are just like her. You looked me in the eyes on the day I proposed, cried real tears, and told me about a dead little sister who never existed—just so you wouldn't have to admit that your sister was ten times the doctor and human being you will ever be."

Camille dropped to her knees on the hotel carpet, weeping hysterically, reaching out for Nathaniel's hands. "Nathaniel, I love you! We have our whole lives planned! We're supposed to take over the Ashford Surgical Clinic together! Dad is naming you the junior clinical director next month!"

Nathaniel stepped back, avoiding her touch as if she were radioactive.

"Your father's clinic is bankrupt, Camille."

Camille froze, her sobs cutting off instantly. She looked up at him through wild strands of hair. "What?"

"Your father hasn't performed a successful joint replacement in fourteen months because his hands have an arthritic tremor he's been hiding from the state board," Nathaniel said coldly. "He's facing three massive malpractice lawsuits for botching post-op recoveries. The Ashford Surgical Clinic is under federal investigation for billing fraud, and they are four million dollars in debt to private equity creditors."

Camille stared at him, her mouth agape in sheer disbelief. "No... that's impossible. Dad has the foundation... the family trust..."

"The foundation is empty," Nathaniel said, pulling his wedding ring off his finger and setting it gently on the glass coffee table beside his room key. "Your father only wanted me to marry you so my fellowship grant money and Dr. Coulson's surgical network would bail his failing clinic out. He didn't want a son-in-law, Camille. He wanted a financial life raft."

Nathaniel picked up his overnight duffel bag from the chair and walked toward the suite door.

"Where are you going?!" Camille screamed, scrambling to her feet, grabbing at his sleeve.

Nathaniel paused at the threshold, looking down at the woman he thought he knew.

"I'm filing for an immediate annulment on Monday morning," Nathaniel said softly. "And then, I'm going to Northlight to ask your sister for forgiveness."

He pulled the door shut behind him, leaving Camille standing alone in the silent hotel room, the brass numbers on the door gleaming in the dim hallway light like an epitaph.
