Chapter 5 - The Smug Parasites and the Breakfast of Deception

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the kitchen, casting a pale golden light across the marble countertops.

By 6:30 AM, I had showered, dressed in a tailored charcoal-grey suit, and prepared a full breakfast spread: scrambled eggs, fresh pastries, artisanal jam, and freshly pressed orange juice.

When Gertrude shuffled out of the master bedroom in her floral nightgown, her eyes lit up with predatory satisfaction. She assumed my sudden domestic subservience was the direct result of Tristan’s threat.

“Well, well,” Gertrude sneered, taking a seat at the head of the dining table without waiting to be invited. “I see last night taught you some manners, Abigail. When a woman knows her place, the home runs smoothly.”

“Good morning, Gertrude,” I said pleasantly, pouring her a cup of freshly brewed dark roast. “I hope your blood pressure is better today.”

“It’s still elevated,” she sighed dramatically, reaching for a warm croissant. “Tristan tells me you cleaned my bathroom. Did you use the vinegar solution on the brass faucets like I like?”

“I took care of everything, Gertrude. Exactly as it deserved to be handled.”

Tristan walked in a moment later, yawning loudly, wearing a silk robe I had purchased for his birthday two years ago. He walked up behind me and attempted to place a heavy hand on my shoulder. I smoothly pivoted toward the refrigerator to grab the cream, causing his hand to drop into empty air.

“Morning, babe,” Tristan said, his voice dripping with condescending affection. “See? Wasn’t so hard to be cooperative, was it? We’re a team. As long as you remember that, we don’t need to talk about divorce anymore.”

“I’m glad we understand each other, Tristan,” I replied, looking directly into his deceitful eyes with a warm, steady smile. “In fact, I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said regarding our future. You mentioned wanting to expand your business ventures through Apex Partners.”

Tristan’s eyes widened slightly, a flash of greed sparking behind his pupils. He glanced quickly at his mother, who gave him a barely perceptible nod of encouragement.

“Yeah?” Tristan leaned forward over the island. “I mean, yeah, Abigail. Apex Partners has massive potential. We’re looking at securing some major regional distribution contracts. But I need startup capital. If we pulled a home equity line on this condo—say, two hundred and fifty thousand—I could double it in six months.”

“That sounds like a very ambitious plan,” I said smoothly, picking up my leather briefcase. “Let’s discuss the paperwork tonight over dinner. I’ll be working late on a corporate filing, but I should be back by seven.”

“You’re serious?” Tristan asked, barely able to conceal the euphoria in his voice. He was practically vibrating with the belief that his master plan was falling into place without a single obstacle.

“I have never been more serious about our future, Tristan,” I said.

I picked up my car keys and walked toward the door.

“Oh, Abigail,” Gertrude called out from the table, chewing on her pastry. “Take my laundry with you to the dry cleaners on your way to work. The silk blouses need special care.”

I turned at the threshold, looking at the two of them sitting in the home I had purchased with my own sweat and sleepless nights.

“Leave them by the door, Gertrude,” I said gently. “By tonight, everything will be completely sorted out.”

I stepped into the hallway, let the heavy door latch shut, and took the elevator down to the garage.

The stage was set. The trap was armed. Now, it was time to unleash the law.
