Chapter 2 - The Ringtone Of Ruin Echoing Across The Great Hall

Inside the vaulted dining room of The Pines Manor, crystal chandeliers cast a warm, glittering glow over tables set with antique silverware and hand-folded linen napkins. Teresa Alcantara stood by the double mahogany doors, directing two nervous catering waitresses with sharp snaps of her fingers.
“Make sure the champagne flutes are polished with microfiber, not standard towels!” Teresa barked. “We are hosting the senior executive delegation from Altavista Hospitality in less than an hour. If this partnership goes through, it guarantees our family’s estate for the next three decades. I will not have it ruined by lazy staff.”
Mateo Alcantara, Teresa’s husband and the figurehead patriarch of the estate, walked into the hall adjusting his silk tie. “Teresa, is it wise what you did with Javier’s girl? Leaving her at the terminal? If she calls someone or complains, it could create unpleasant tension during lunch.”
Teresa scoffed, waving her hand dismissively. “Mateo, don't be soft. That girl came from a nameless background in the city. Javier rushed into that marriage without our approval. She needs to understand that in this house, she is an assistant, not an heiress. Walking a few miles in the rain will break that stubborn pride of hers. By the time she crawls through our gates, she’ll be begging to pour our tea.”
Mariana strutted down the grand staircase, still glued to her phone, checking the view counts on her viral social media story. “She hasn’t even called Javier once, Mom. She’s probably sitting on a bench crying like a lost dog. I give her another hour before she calls an expensive Uber and shows up looking like a drowned rat.”
Javier sat near the grand fireplace, twirling his wedding band nervously around his finger. A tiny knot of unease had begun to twist in his stomach, but he quickly pushed it down. Sofia will get over it, he told himself. She always forgives me. Once mom gives her approval, things will go back to normal.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the manor’s administrative office burst open.
Julian Vance, the long-time General Manager of The Pines Manor, stumbled into the dining room. His face was devoid of color, his skin an ashen gray, and his hands trembled so violently that he nearly dropped the leather-bound executive folder he was carrying.
“Mrs. Alcantara… Mr. Alcantara…” Julian stammered, catching his breath against the dining table.
“Julian! What on earth is wrong with you?” Teresa scolded, smoothing her designer dress. “Compose yourself! Mrs. Mendoza’s executive advance team could arrive at any moment!”
“They’re not coming,” Julian choked out.
The room fell dead silent. The only sound was the crackle of the wood in the fireplace and the relentless pounding of the storm against the leaded glass windows.
“What do you mean they’re not coming?” Mateo demanded, stepping forward with a furrowed brow. “We signed the preliminary intent document last Tuesday. This meeting was just a formal walkthrough for the board!”
“I just received a direct call from Altavista’s corporate legal headquarters in Manhattan,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking with panic. “The entire deal has been terminated. The three-year venue exclusive… the twelve million dollar renovation grant… the vendor management contract… all of it. They have officially rescinded every single offer.”
Teresa let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. “That’s impossible! Why would they terminate a contract thirty minutes before the walkthrough? Did another resort underbid us? Did the Finger Lakes Tourism Council intervene?”
Julian looked directly at Teresa, his eyes wide with unadulterated horror.
“No, ma'am. The Chief Legal Officer told me directly before hanging up.” Julian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. “He said the contract was terminated because the woman you deliberately abandoned on the highway forty minutes ago… is Sofia Mendoza. The sole heiress and only child of Elena Mendoza.”
Mariana’s phone slipped from her fingers. It hit the hardwood floor with a sharp, sickening crack.
Javier leaped to his feet, knocking his heavy leather armchair backward. His glass of bourbon shattered against the stone hearth, amber liquid hissing into the dying embers.
“What did you just say?” Javier yelled, his voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek. “Sofia’s mother is a high school art teacher! That’s what she told me when we met! She said her family worked in hotel management!”
“Altavista Group is hotel management, you idiot!” Julian screamed back, losing all professional decorum. “Elena Mendoza owns forty-two luxury five-star resorts across three continents! Sofia didn't use her mother’s corporate influence because she wanted to build her own career! And you… you people just left her on the side of a rural highway in a freezing rainstorm!”

Teresa grabbed the edge of the dining table, her knuckles turning bone-white. The air seemed to vanish from the room. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs as the full magnitude of her catastrophic arrogance crashed down upon her.
“Call her,” Mateo roared, turning on his son with bared teeth. “Javier! Pick up your phone and call your wife right now! Fix this! FIX THIS!”
