Chapter 6 - When the Signatures on the Wall Bleed Red

The ballroom erupted into a frenzy of camera shutters and frantic murmurs.
Michael shook himself out of his stupor, his face flushing crimson with a mixture of humiliation and blinding rage. He abandoned Amber near the front row and stormed up the steps of the stage, his fists clenched at his sides.
“Catherine! What the hell is this circus?” Michael hissed, trying to grab the microphone from the podium. “Have you lost your damn mind? This is a private corporate gala! Get off this stage before I have security throw you out!”
Harrison Bennett, our seven-foot-tall lead counsel whose legal victories had dismantled Fortune 500 monopolies, stepped smoothly between Michael and the podium.
“Mr. Vance, take three steps back,” Harrison said, his baritone voice echoing with chilling legal finality. “Or security will remove you from this building in compliance with the emergency injunction filed at four o’clock this afternoon in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.”
“Injunction? What injunction?” Michael yelled, looking desperately around the room at the board members who were watching him with icy, stone-faced silence. “I am the CEO of Apex Global Logistics! I built this company! You can’t fire me!”
I stepped around Harrison, meeting Michael’s frantic gaze with absolute serenity.
“You didn’t build Apex, Michael,” I said calmly, projecting my voice directly into the microphone for every reporter in the room to record. “My grandfather’s trust provided every single penny of your seed capital. Vanguard Holdings owns sixty-two percent of Apex’s super-voting shares. For eight years, I allowed you to act as the public face of this company because I loved you. Because I believed that a man from humble beginnings could rise with integrity.”
I paused, letting the silence settle thick and heavy over the crowd.
“But when a man uses his company’s capital to fund an offshore fraud scheme called Aegis Holdings,” I continued, “and when that same man abandons his wife while she is giving birth to his daughter to pop champagne with his co-conspirator... he is no longer an executive. He is simply a common thief.”
A chorus of gasps rippled through the audience.
Reporters began furiously typing on their tablets. Photographers pushed past the velvet ropes, their flashbulbs illuminating the wild, terrified panic in Michael’s eyes.
“That’s a lie! She’s fabricating evidence!” Amber shrieked from the front row, pushing her way toward the stairs. “Michael is a genius! She’s just a bitter, jealous ex-wife trying to steal his hard work because he left her!”
Rachel stepped out from the wings of the stage, holding a thick stack of printed financial documents.
“Miss Collins,” Rachel announced over the auxiliary microphone, her voice dripping with triumphant sarcasm. “These are the wire transfer records from the Bank of Nova Scotia. Yesterday at 2:15 p.m., four point two million dollars was wired from Apex’s operational payroll account into an account registered under your personal social security number and the shell company Aegis Holdings.”
Amber froze. Her hands began to shake violently, clutching her emerald gown.
“Furthermore,” Rachel added, looking directly into the camera lenses, “Miss Collins used those stolen corporate funds this morning to purchase a two-hundred-thousand-dollar Porsche and a diamond necklace from Tiffany & Co. Both of which have already been flagged by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.”
Michael turned around and stared at Amber, his eyes wide with horror. “Amber... you transferred the payroll funds directly into your personal account? You told me it was routed through a blind trust in Zurich!”
Amber backed away from the stage, her voice cracking in hysterical desperation. “You told me to handle the transfers, Michael! You signed the authorization forms! You said we were taking the money and leaving her with nothing!”
“Shut up! Shut up!” Michael roared, lunging toward Amber.
Before he could reach her, two uniformed federal agents from the Department of Justice, accompanied by four hotel security guards, stepped onto the ballroom floor.

“Michael Vance? Amber Collins?” the lead federal agent stated, unholstering a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs. “You are both under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and grand larceny against the Vanguard Sterling Trust. You have the right to remain silent.”
The click of the handcuffs echoing through the Grand Ballroom was the sweetest symphony I had ever heard.
