Chapter 11 - The Midnight Raid on the Blackwood Creek Compound

The Mercer hunting lodge at Blackwood Creek was not a rustic cabin; it was a fortress.

Tucked deep into seventy thousand acres of dense, private pine forest in upstate New York, the compound featured a concrete-reinforced perimeter wall, private helipads, and a state-of-the-art satellite communications bunker. It was the place where Douglas Mercer, Juliette, and the directors of the Aegis Syndicate met when they needed to make decisions that could never be recorded in a corporate boardroom.

At two o'clock in the morning, under a moonless, freezing sky, Marcus Vance and I arrived at the perimeter ridge overlooking the compound.

We were not alone.

Behind us, resting in the shadows of the tree line, were twenty-four operators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Hostage Rescue Team and the Department of Homeland Security’s Tactical Operations Division, led by Special Agent-in-Charge Sarah Reyes.

"Thermal imaging shows seven heat signatures inside the main lodge," Agent Reyes whispered, adjusting her night-vision binoculars. "Two armed guards on the balcony, four perimeter patrols with attack dogs. Arthur Vance's private helicopter is on the pad with rotors cold."

"They're preparing to burn the paper archives in the basement incinerator," Marcus said, pointing to a faint plume of gray smoke rising from the stone chimney. "If we wait for morning, eighty percent of the offshore financial trails will be gone."

Reyes looked at me. "Miss Mercer, you’ve provided the legal authorization as the sole surviving managing director of the property trust. Once we breach that gate, this is an active federal raid. Are you certain you want to be on the ground for this?"

I looked down at the lodge where my sister had celebrated my supposed death with the men who supplied the accelerant for my bedroom door.

"I’m not staying in the truck, Agent Reyes," I said firmly. "I want Arthur Vance to see my face when you put the cuffs on him."

"Move in," Reyes commanded into her tactical headset.

What followed was two minutes of surgical, overwhelming force.

Flashbang grenades shattered the midnight silence with blinding white light and deafening concussive blasts. The high-voltage perimeter fences were cut in seconds; tactical breaching vehicles smashed through the heavy cedar gates, flooding the compound with fifty-thousand-lumen spotlights.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! GET ON THE GROUND!"

The private Blackwood Tactical guards barely had time to raise their automatic rifles before they were neutralized by non-lethal acoustic weapons and flash-suppressed fire.

Marcus and I moved directly behind the lead tactical stack, entering the massive great room of the lodge.

The room was in total disarray. Briefcases filled with bearer bonds, gold bullion, and encrypted hard drives were scattered across the Persian rugs. Standing near the massive stone fireplace was Arthur Vance—a cold, sixty-year-old man in a tailored tactical sweater, clutching a burning stack of corporate manifests.

When he heard the boots hit the floorboards, Arthur turned, drawing a customized 9mm pistol from his shoulder holster.

"Vance!" Marcus shouted, his tactical rifle leveled dead at Arthur's forehead. "Drop the weapon or you die in this room!"

Arthur Vance looked at the laser sights painting his chest, then his cold, calculating eyes drifted to the woman standing beside Marcus.

He stared at my scarred face, the firelight from the hearth illuminating the raised, twisted tissue of my left cheek.

"Caroline Mercer," Arthur whispered, a twisted, admiring smirk spreading across his lips. "I told Juliette that using thermite on a girl with your mother's stubborn blood was a mistake. You should have checked the body yourself, Arthur... that's what I told her."

"Drop the gun, Arthur," I said, stepping past the tactical shields. "It’s over. The Swiss authorities froze your Zurich dummy accounts two hours ago. Your helicopter pilot is already in federal custody. There is nowhere left for you to fly."

Arthur Vance looked at the burning fireplace behind him, then looked at the dozens of federal barrels aimed at his skull.

Slowly, carefully, he uncurled his fingers. The heavy pistol dropped to the stone floor with a dull, heavy thud.

"You think you’ve won something tonight, Caroline?" Arthur laughed, raising his hands as two tactical agents forced him to his knees and secured his wrists with heavy zip-ties. "You took down your sister. You destroyed your father. But you're still just a girl with a ruined face and an empty family."

I walked over to the fireplace, grabbed the heavy iron poker, and pulled the remaining unburned ledgers from the flames, stamping out the sparks with my boot.

May you like

I looked down into the eyes of the man who had ordered my mother's death.

"My face was ruined by monsters like you, Arthur," I said softly, handing the scorched ledgers to Agent Reyes. "But unlike you... my soul is completely intact. Enjoy the rest of your life in a concrete cage."
