Chapter 9 - The Day the Federal Subpoenas Dropped on His Marble Desk

The screen transitioned seamlessly from the hotel photographs to a detailed, forensic breakdown of the Aegis Holdings asset transfer.
In massive, glowing red letters, every investor, judge, and dockland captain in the room read the cold, undeniable legal reality:
ALL OPERATING LICENSES, REAL ESTATE ASSETS, AND MARITIME DOCKS OF BENNETT LOGISTICS TRANSFERRED TO NEMESIS CAPITAL TRUST AS OF 08:00 AM TODAY.
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER: CLAIRE BENNETT.
REMAINING CORPORATE LIABILITIES ASSIGNED TO MASON BENNETT: $114,800,000.
The silence in the ballroom was shattered by a collective, deafening gasp.
"Turn it off!" Mason roared from the podium, slamming his fist against the wood. "Turn the damn screen off!"
Grant Mercer was frantically typing into his phone, his face gray with horror. "Mason... the servers are locked out! The whole network is routing through Zurich! We don't have administrative access!"
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the Grand Ballroom swung open with a resounding crash.
A dozen men in dark suits and windbreakers bearing the yellow letters FBI and SEC marched down the center aisle, flanked by uniformed Chicago police officers.
Leading them was Special Agent Marcus Vance—the estranged brother of Commissioner Frank Vance—holding a stack of federal arrest and seizure warrants.
"Mason Bennett!" Agent Vance announced, his voice cutting through the panic like a siren. "You are hereby served with an emergency federal injunction issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. All assets under your personal control have been frozen pursuant to Title 18, United States Code, Section 1962."
The four hundred guests scrambled to the sides of the ballroom, knocking over champagne flutes and centerpieces in their desperate rush to distance themselves from the radioactive figure standing on the stage.
Mason stood frozen, his eyes wide, his chest heaving, his immaculate facade completely dismantled in less than ninety seconds.
He looked across the chaotic room, searching desperately for an ally.
He looked at Commissioner Vance, but the commissioner was already slipping out the service exit with his coat pulled over his face.
He looked at Grant Mercer, but Grant had his hands raised in the air, backing slowly away toward the kitchen doors.
Finally, Mason’s wild, panicked eyes found me.
I was standing near the center aisle, holding my champagne glass, completely serene amidst the wreckage of his life.
Mason descended the stage stairs, shoving past two federal agents before being restrained against the mahogany banquet table.
"Claire!" Mason screamed, his voice cracking with a mixture of rage, disbelief, and primal terror. "What did you do?! What the hell did you do?!"
I walked slowly toward him, the train of my emerald gown gliding over the shattered glass on the carpet.
May you like
I stopped two feet away from him, looking down into the eyes of the man who had laughed about my devotion in a smoke-filled room seven nights ago.
"I didn't do anything, Mason," I whispered, loud enough for every agent and camera crew to hear. "I just stopped trying to save the marriage. Exactly like you asked."
