Chapter 13 - The Golden Boy’s Betrayal: Kyle’s Final Scramble

The final blow to Daniel’s spirit came not from the courts, not from me, but from his own beloved family.
Two days after the court hearing, while Daniel was staying in a dingy, twenty-five-dollar-a-night motel on the edge of the industrial district, Kyle executed his final betrayal.
Desperate to avoid criminal prosecution from his equipment vendors, Kyle took the spare keys to Daniel’s corporate storage locker—a small unit Daniel had rented to store his expensive golf clubs, his vintage watch collection, his bespoke designer suits, and several high-end electronics.
Kyle loaded everything into the back of an old pickup truck, drove across state lines to an upscale pawnshop in Milwaukee, and liquidated Daniel’s entire lifetime of personal luxury possessions for nine thousand dollars in cash.
When Daniel discovered the empty locker on Friday afternoon, he called Kyle in a blind panic.
Kyle answered the phone, his voice cold, cynical, and completely devoid of brotherly love.
"Thanks for the inventory, bro," Kyle said flatly. "Consider it payback for promising to fund my business and then leaving me out to dry. You always were a fake, Daniel. Claire was the only real thing in your life, and you were too stupid to know it. Don't call me again."
Kyle hung up the phone and threw the burner SIM card away.
When Daniel called his mother, begging her to intervene and demand that Kyle return his belongings, Patricia coldly informed him that Kyle had used the cash to pay her back property taxes, so "at least one of her sons had proven to be a real man."
Patricia hung up on him.

Daniel stood in the middle of the empty, dusty storage unit, surrounded by bare concrete walls, completely alone in the world.
He had sacrificed his marriage, his integrity, and his wife’s profound love to appease a family of parasites who had discarded him the very second his pockets were empty.
