Chapter 6 - The Unveiling of the Jubilee Feast

The grand double doors of the penthouse opened silently as Darcy, Leo, and I stepped out of the private elevator vestibule. From the foyer, the lively chatter, clinking crystal, and rich laughter of eighty wealthy Chicago socialites echoed through the vaulted corridors.

No one noticed our arrival. All eyes were locked on the head of the forty-foot dining table, where Fiona Vance was smiling beatifically, her manicured hands hovering over the polished handle of Cloche Number One.

“Shall I reveal the first course, Arthur?” Fiona cooed to Arthur Pendelton, who was eagerly leaning forward with a linen napkin tucked into his collar.

“Do the honors, Fiona! Let’s see what culinary miracle your family has conjured!” Pendelton boomed.

With a dramatic, theatrical flourish, Fiona gripped the silver handle and lifted Cloche Number One high into the air.

The room held its breath, expecting a delicate portion of beluga caviar on gold-leaf blinis or a poached quail egg nestled in black truffle puree.

Instead, resting flat on the 24-karat gold-rimmed Wedgwood china, was a thick, pristine white leather binder embossed with shimmering foil letters:

COURSE 1: THE FOUNDATION AUDIT — $400,000 IN DEFUNDED CHARITY WIRE TRANSFERS TO SAKS FIFTH AVENUE & CABO SAN LUCAS (2021–2024).

Fiona’s smile instantly froze on her face. Her perfectly sculpted eyebrows drew together in deep confusion. “What… what is this? Julian, is this a joke? Where is the amuse-bouche?”

Julian’s brow furrowed. He chuckled nervously, glancing down the long table at the guests who were craning their necks to see. “A packaging error from the catering company, Mother. Don't worry. Open Cloche Number Two!”

Arthur Pendelton reached over and lifted Cloche Number Two.

Underneath Cloche Number Two sat an identical leather binder:

COURSE 2: THE SOUTH LOOP LOVE NEST — $4,200/MONTH LEASE AGREEMENT FOR CHLOE BENNETT, EXECUTED BY JULIAN VANCE UNDER THE DEFUNCT VANCE CULTURAL ARTS GUILD.

Attached to the cover of the binder was a full-page, high-resolution color photograph of Julian passionately kissing twenty-four-year-old Chloe Bennett on the balcony of the luxury South Loop high-rise, with a certified copy of the lease agreement signed in Julian’s handwriting beneath it.

Pendelton’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. He adjusted his half-moon spectacles, squinting at the photograph, then looked up at Julian, his jaw dropping in utter shock.

“Julian… isn't this the young girl who used to answer the phones at Vance & Sterling?” Pendelton asked, his voice cutting through the suddenly hushed room like a meat cleaver.

Julian’s face went completely bloodless. The arrogant flush in his cheeks vanished, replaced by a sick, gray pallor. “What… what the hell is that? Who put that there?”

“Open Cloche Number Three!” a voice called out from the middle of the table.

Mrs. Montgomery, a prominent board member of the Lyric Opera who had donated $50,000 to Fiona’s guild last fall, reached forward and lifted the third silver dome.

COURSE 3: THE LYRIC OPERA ‘DONATION’ CONVERSION — $50,000 TRANSFERRED DIRECTLY TO JULIAN VANCE’S PRIVATE ROBINHOOD ACCOUNT TO COVER MARGIN CALL LOSSES.

Underneath Cloche Number Four:

COURSE 4: THE FAKE GREEN ENERGY HEDGE FUND — $1.2 MILLION IN UNLICENSED SECURITIES FRAUD SOLICITED FROM SADDLE & CYCLE CLUB MEMBERS.

Underneath Cloche Number Five:

COURSE 5: THE TIFFANY & CO. PLATINUM BRACELET — INVOICE #88492 PURCHASED WITH CHARITABLE DONATIONS FOR MISTRESS CHLOE BENNETT ON CHRISTMAS EVE.

Within thirty seconds, chaos erupted.

Guests along both sides of the forty-foot table began frantically lifting the silver domes. Cloches clattered against the fine china, ringing out like chaotic church bells. Every single one of the sixty cloches revealed another devastating, incontrovertible piece of evidence: bank statements, forged checks, forensic wire logs, surveillance photos of Julian’s secret life, tax evasion notices from the State of Illinois, and certified copies of Julian’s FINRA debarment letters.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Fiona shrieked, jumping to her feet, her crystal champagne flute slipping from her trembling fingers and shattering into a hundred pieces across the hardwood floor. “Julian! What is this filth?! Who did this?!”

“I did,” I said, my voice ringing out with cool, absolute authority.

I stepped out from the arched hallway into the center of the grand dining room, dressed in a sleek, tailored midnight-blue pantsuit, flanked by Darcy Sterling and Leo.

The entire room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence. Eighty of Chicago’s most powerful figures turned in unison to stare at me.

Julian spun around, his hands shaking violently, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror, fury, and disbelief.

“Sloan?!” Julian stammered, pointing a trembling finger at me. “You… you crazy b****! What have you done?! What is all this garbage?!”

“It’s not garbage, Julian,” I said calmly, taking slow, measured steps toward the head of the table. “It’s your mother’s Diamond Jubilee feast. Sixty distinct, heritage dishes. Exactly as you demanded last night when you dragged me across the floor, locked me in the kitchen, and threatened to throw me onto the street if I failed to serve your family.”

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the dining room. Several prominent women covered their mouths in shock.

“She’s lying!” Julian screamed, looking desperately around the table at his elite peers. “She’s insane! She’s having a psychotic breakdown! Arthur, don't look at those papers! They’re forged! She fabricated everything because she’s jealous of my mother’s standing in the community!”

“Forged?” Darcy Sterling stepped forward, opening her leather litigation portfolio and slapping three thick legal documents onto the table directly in front of Arthur Pendelton. “I am Darcy Sterling, senior managing partner at Sterling & Croft. Every single exhibit resting under those sixty cloches has been verified under penalty of perjury, certified by forensic digital auditors, and entered into the official record of the Circuit Court of Cook County under Case Number 2024-D-09823.”

Darcy turned her piercing gaze upon Fiona, who was clutching the back of her velvet chair, breathing in shallow, ragged gasps.

“Mrs. Fiona Vance,” Darcy projected clearly. “At 8:15 this morning, the Honorable Judge Elena Martinez signed an emergency ex-parte Order of Protection against both you and your son. You are formally restrained from approaching within one thousand feet of Sloan Sterling.”

“This is my son’s house!” Fiona shrieked, her face turning a mottled, furious red, her aristocratic composure completely disintegrating into hysterical rage. “Julian pays the mortgage! Julian bought this penthouse! You have no right to come into our home and humiliate us in front of our friends! Get out! Get out before I have the building security throw you into the gutter where you belong!”

I looked Fiona straight in the eyes, unblinking, unyielding, and entirely free of fear.

“Fiona,” I said softly, the silence of the room amplifying every syllable. “Julian has never paid a single cent toward this mortgage. This penthouse was purchased entirely with my pre-marital patent liquidation funds through the Sloan Sterling Heritage Trust. Julian’s name is nowhere on the title. You and your son have been living in my home as non-paying guests for five years.”

I paused, letting the reality sink into the frozen room.

“And your reservation has just been canceled.”
