Chapter 12 - The Viral SabotageIn the modern era of corporate warfare, you don’t need an army to destroy an empire. You just need an algorithm.

Before Elias could even locate Victor’s hotel suite, the first bomb detonated. It didn't happen in a courtroom; it happened on the screens of millions of smartphones across the country.

I was standing in the Foundation’s lobby the next morning, greeting a family we had just saved from an illegal eviction, when my phone began to vibrate violently. It was a barrage of notifications, followed by an emergency call from my PR director, Sarah.

“Have you seen Facebook? Have you seen TikTok?” Sarah practically screamed into the receiver.

“No, I’m with clients. What’s going on?” I demanded, excusing myself and stepping into a private alcove.

“There is a highly coordinated, heavily funded smear campaign trending number one nationwide,” Sarah gasped. “Someone leaked highly manipulated audio files and forged medical documents. They are pushing a narrative that your mother never actually went missing. The videos are claiming that you and your mother orchestrated her 'disappearance' years ago as a massive insurance fraud scheme, and that you framed your father to steal the Sterling empire.”

My stomach bottomed out. “That’s absurd. The federal prosecutors literally proved my father held her captive and hid her assets!”

“The internet doesn't care about federal transcripts!” Sarah pleaded. “They care about scandal. The videos are perfectly edited for social media drama. They’ve hired influencers to react to it. People are eating it up. There are already protestors gathering outside the lobby doors calling the Foundation a money-laundering front!”

I looked out the massive glass doors of the lobby. She was right. A crowd of people holding cell phones on selfie-sticks and shouting angrily was beginning to press against the security barricades. The flashing lights of news vans were reflecting off the wet pavement.

Victor was weaponizing the court of public opinion. If the public believed the Foundation was a scam, our donors would pull out, and the federal judge overseeing Victor’s inheritance claim would have all the justification needed to freeze our accounts pending an investigation.

I hung up the phone and marched toward the private executive elevator. When I reached the penthouse, my mother was already there, pacing the floor, her face pale and drawn.

“They are saying terrible things,” she whispered, holding her iPad with trembling hands. “They are calling us thieves.”

“Mom, look at me,” I said, walking over and gently taking the tablet from her grasp. I held her shoulders, grounding her. “This is Victor. He wants us to panic. He wants us to issue a defensive, tearful press release so we look guilty and weak. We are not going to give him the satisfaction.”

“But how do we fight an invisible mob?” she asked, tears shining in her eyes.

“We don't fight the mob,” I said, my eyes hardening into diamonds. “We cut off the head of the snake feeding them.”

The doors to the office swung open. Elias walked in, looking like a man ready for war.

“I found him,” Elias said grimly. “He’s holding court in the penthouse suite of the Four Seasons. He’s hosting a private dinner tonight with three of the municipal judges who oversee the commercial zoning board. He’s bribing them to lock down our perimeter.”

“Perfect,” I smiled, a cold, dangerous expression that made even Elias pause. I walked over to the mahogany desk and opened a locked drawer, pulling out a heavy, encrypted flash drive.

“What is that?” Elias asked.

“When Daniel begged for forgiveness before he went to prison, he tried to offer me a digital key to my father’s deepest blackmail vault,” I explained, gripping the cold metal drive. “I didn't use it during the trial because we didn't need it. But Daniel mentioned that my father kept meticulous, ruinous files on everyone he ever groomed. Including his secret son.”

I turned to my lead investigator. “Elias, get the car. We are crashing a dinner party.”
