Chapter 10 - The Matriarch’s Final Strike and the Trap That Closed Around Eleanor Whitmore

While Noah was recovering in the hospital, Eleanor Whitmore made her final, desperate gamble.

Refusing to accept her exile, she had leveraged her remaining personal liquid assets to hire an unlicensed private intelligence firm led by a disgraced former CIA operative named Carver. Their mission: to plant falsified prescription narcotics and staged evidence of neglect inside Grace’s Havenport cottage while she was at the hospital, then alert the Maine Child Protective Services to seize Noah immediately upon discharge.

Eleanor was insane with wounded narcissism. She believed that if she could strip Grace of custody through state authorities, Caleb would be forced to return to New York and reclaim his place under her thumb.

She didn't know that Marcus Vance’s team had bugged Carver’s communications forty-eight hours earlier.

On Friday midnight, a black van pulled up to the bluffs outside the cottage. Two men in black tactical gear used lockpicks to force open the rear kitchen door. They carried a medical lockbox filled with unmarked vials of oxycodone and forged medical records.

The moment their boots crossed the threshold, the floodlights erupted.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons and get on the ground!”

Sixteen federal agents, backed by Maine State Police tactical units, swarmed the perimeter from the surrounding woods. Carver and his operative were pinned to the kitchen floor in seconds, zip-tied, and disarmed.

Simultaneously, four hundred miles south in Greenwich, Connecticut, three federal black sedans pulled into the circular driveway of the Whitmore estate.

Eleanor Whitmore was sitting in her drawing room, sipping gin, waiting for the confirmation call from Carver.

Instead, the front double doors were breached with a battering ram.

Special Agent Henderson of the FBI’s New York Field Office entered the grand foyer, holding an unsealed federal arrest warrant.

“Eleanor Whitmore,” Henderson announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit witness tampering, interstate extortion, wire fraud, and subornation of perjury.”

Eleanor stood up, her diamond rings catching the light, her face contorted with aristocratic outrage. “How dare you! Do you know who I am? Call Richard Sterling immediately!”

“Mr. Sterling has entered into a non-prosecution cooperation agreement with the Department of Justice two hours ago, Mrs. Whitmore,” Henderson said coldly, stepping forward with handcuffs. “He surrendered all the server backups. Put your hands behind your back.”

The cold steel clicked around the gold bracelets on her wrists.

As she was led down the stone steps of her mansion into the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruiser, a dozen press cameras—alerted by an anonymous tip—flashed in the darkness, capturing the definitive fall of the Whitmore matriarch for the entire world to see.
