Chapter 1

The drive back from the retirement community felt longer than the journey there. The leather envelope from Eleanor Whitmore sat on the passenger seat of Everett’s car, looking like a relic from another century. In the quiet of the late afternoon, the weight of his grandfather Jonathan’s words pressed against his chest.

“Find the room beneath the west library.”

Everett hadn’t stepped foot in the Langford estate in Marblehead since the day the moving trucks had arrived to strip it of its furniture and its soul. He had thought he was done with that place. He had told Maren that the house was a tomb for the living, and he had no intention of visiting a cemetery.

But Jonathan Langford hadn’t been a man of riddles. He was a man of steel and architecture, a man who built things to last centuries. If he had hidden something, it wasn’t out of sentimentality. It was out of necessity.

His phone buzzed on the dashboard. It was Maren.

"Hey," he said, his voice softening instantly. "How’s the little guy?"

"Bennett is finally down for a nap," Maren replied. Her voice sounded lighter these days, though there was still a trace of the exhaustion that trauma leaves behind. "He’s growing so fast, Everett. I think he’s going to have your grandfather’s chin."

Everett swallowed hard. "I’m on my way back. But I... I have to make a stop at the old house first."

There was a long pause on the other end. "Why? I thought the keys were with the real estate agent."

"I saw Eleanor. My aunt. She gave me a letter from my grandfather. Maren, there’s something in that house. Something he wanted me to find only if Celeste tried to take control."

"Everett," Maren whispered, "we have everything we need right here. We have the Maine house. We have our peace. Is it worth going back into that darkness?"

"He called it an insurance policy," Everett said, looking at the road ahead. "If I don't find it, Celeste might. She’s in a cell, Maren, but she isn’t acting like someone who has lost. She’s acting like someone who is waiting for a rescue."

"Be careful," Maren said. "Please. Just... come home soon."

"I love you," he said.

"I love you more."
