Chapter 12 - The Engagement Breaks

Fay was waiting in the monastery chapel when Silvano brought Josie back.
She did not remember crossing the room.
One moment she stood beneath stained glass with both hands pressed to her mouth. The next, her daughter was in her arms, wet and shaking and alive.
Fay collapsed to her knees, but this time no one had forced her there.
She held Josie so tightly the child squeaked.
Then Fay loosened her grip and covered Josie's face with kisses.
Josie pressed her palm to Fay's cheek.
Fay spoke through tears.
"I'm here. I'm here. I'm here."
Josie felt every word.
Sister Agnes cried openly.
Silvano looked away with the solemn discomfort of a man witnessing something too sacred for his own eyes.
Rafferty returned 40 minutes later with rain in his hair and blood on his cuff that was not his.
Fay saw it.
She also saw Josie alive beside her.
The world had become too complicated for simple judgment.
"Is it over?" she asked.
"No."
Honesty.
She almost hated how much she trusted it.
"But she is safe tonight," he said.
"Celeste?"
"Will attend a press event tomorrow."
Fay blinked.
"What?"
"She announced one before the kidnapping. A charity breakfast for children's hospitals. Cameras invited. Donors present."
"You're still going?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Rafferty's eyes moved to Josie, asleep now with one fist closed around the paper boat.
"Because Celeste built her power in rooms where people were too polite to say what they knew."
He looked back at Fay.
"So we will say it there."
The next morning, the ballroom at the Vanderpool Foundation building filled with reporters, hospital administrators, donors, and society women wearing expensive compassion.
Celeste entered in pale blue.
She looked serene.
Unbothered.
As if no child had screamed in a warehouse less than 12 hours earlier.
Everett stood behind her, expression carved from old money and menace.
Rafferty arrived 3 minutes late.
He was not alone.
Silvano walked at his right.
Mrs. Odette walked at his left.
Behind them came Sister Agnes, Fay, and Josie.
The room changed.
Cameras turned.
Celeste's smile froze.
Everett's face went gray.
Rafferty did not go to the seat reserved for him.
He walked directly to the microphone.
"I came today to correct an engagement announcement."
Reporters leaned forward.
Celeste whispered, "Rafferty."
He did not look at her.
"My engagement to Celeste Vanderpool is over."
The room erupted.
Rafferty waited without raising his voice.
Silence returned because people wanted the rest.
"It is over because last night, in my home, Miss Vanderpool forced a working woman to kneel on marble for hours over a stain Miss Vanderpool caused herself."
Gasps.
Celeste laughed once.
"This is absurd."
Rafferty turned toward the screen behind the podium.
Silvano lifted a remote.
Security footage appeared.
Celeste's elbow moving.
The glass tipping.
Fay standing untouched.
Celeste pointing.
Then the hallway camera: Fay kneeling while party guests passed.
No one spoke now.
"It is also over," Rafferty continued, "because that same working woman's daughter was abducted last night by men connected to Vanderpool interests."
Everett lunged for the microphone.
Silvano stepped in front of him.
Rafferty placed copies of the warehouse folder on the podium.
"The evidence has already gone to federal authorities and to every news desk in this room."
Celeste's face had lost all color.
Fay stood behind Rafferty holding Josie's hand.
She did not feel powerful.
She felt terrified.
But for the first time, the terror was not silent.
Rafferty looked at the cameras.
"New Orleans has been asked to admire cruelty because it wore diamonds. I am done admiring it."
May you like
Then he stepped back.
And the city began to turn.
