Chapter 14 - THE ARRIVAL OF AURELIA

The sirens wailed as the private security transport tore through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel toward Mount Sinai Hospital.

Marco drove like a man possessed, weaving through Manhattan traffic with flashing amber emergency lights mounted on the grill.

In the back seat, Claire gripped Gabriel’s hand with knuckle-whitening force.

“Breathe, sweetheart,” Gabriel urged, his other hand wiping a sheen of cold sweat from her forehead.

“In for four... out for four.”

“Gabriel DeLuca,” Claire groaned through gritted teeth as another contraction seized her abdomen.

“If you tell me to breathe one more time...”

Gabriel leaned down, kissing her temple.

“I love you. You’re doing magnificent.”

Claire let out a ragged breath, leaning her head back against the leather seat.

“How far...?”

“Three blocks,” Marco called back.

“The private maternity wing is already prepped!”

They pulled into the ambulance bay of Mount Sinai.

A team of four obstetric nurses and Dr. Elena Ramos rushed out with a wheelchair.

Gabriel lifted Claire from the vehicle, placing her gently into the chair.

He didn't leave her side for a single second.

They swept through the double doors into the delivery suite on the ninth floor.

The room was vast, quiet, overlooking Central Park and the winter skyline.

Warm lighting.

Soft music playing from the bedside console.

Dr. Ramos scrubbed in, checking the monitors.

“You’re fully dilated, Claire,” Dr. Ramos announced with a warm, encouraging smile.

“This baby is ready to meet her parents.”

“On the next contraction, I need you to give me a big push.”

Claire gripped the side rails of the bed.

Gabriel stood beside her, his left hand locked tightly in hers, his right arm supporting her back.

“Look at me, Claire,” Gabriel said softly, his voice cutting through the rising tide of pain.

She looked into his dark eyes.

She saw no fear there.

Only an ocean of steady, unyielding love.

“We’re doing this together,” he said.

“Right now.”

The contraction peaked.

Claire threw her head back and pushed with everything she had left.

She screamed—a sound of raw, primal power that echoed off the glass windows.

Gabriel held her close, whispering prayers in Italian against her ear, his thumb rubbing small circles on the back of her trembling hand.

“Again, Claire!” Dr. Ramos coached.

“One more! She’s right here!”

Claire took a deep, shuddering breath.

She locked eyes with Gabriel.

She squeezed his hand so hard she felt his wedding band press deep into her flesh.

She pushed with the last ounce of her strength.

A moment of intense, blinding pressure followed.

Then, absolute release.

And then, breaking through the quiet of the high-rise delivery suite, came the loudest, sweetest sound on earth.

A sharp, indignant, beautiful cry:

WAAAAAH!

The room filled with the music of a newborn life.

Dr. Ramos laughed, lifting a squirming, perfect baby girl into the warm air.

“It’s a girl!” the nurse announced.

“Eight pounds, two ounces of pure perfection!”

Claire collapsed back into the pillows, tears pouring down her cheeks in rivers of overwhelming joy.

Gabriel stood over the bed, completely frozen.

The man who had stood down federal prosecutors, mob hitmen, and corporate empires without blinking felt his knees tremble.

Tears spilled over his dark lashes, running down his stubbled cheeks.

The nurse cleaned the baby and wrapped her in a soft pink woolen blanket.

She carried the bundle over and placed her gently onto Claire’s bare chest.

The baby immediately stopped crying.

She nuzzled against Claire’s warm skin, her tiny rosebud lips letting out a soft, contented sigh.

She had a thick mop of silky black hair, just like her father.

And when she opened her tiny, dark eyes for the first time, she looked straight at Gabriel.

Gabriel knelt beside the bed.

He reached out a trembling finger.

The baby’s tiny hand reached out, her miniature fingers curling tightly around his index finger.

Her grip was surprisingly strong.

Gabriel buried his face into the blankets, weeping silently against his daughter's tiny chest.

“Hello, little one,” Gabriel whispered, his voice broken with awe and adoration.

Claire stroked the baby’s soft cheek with her thumb.

She looked at Gabriel through her tears.

“What should we name her?” Claire asked softly.

Gabriel looked up, his eyes shining with boundless love.

“Aurelia,” Gabriel said.

“It means golden.”

“Because she brought the light back into our world.”

Claire smiled, kissing her daughter’s forehead.

May you like

“Aurelia Hayes DeLuca.”

“Welcome home, my sweet girl.”
