Chapter 6 - Brooke's Desperate Trap

Brooke’s face went entirely bloodless. She stumbled backward against the wooden railing of the porch, clutching her designer handbag against her chest like a shield.

“You… you set me up!” Brooke shrieked, her voice cracking with pure terror.

“You set yourself up, Mrs. Miller,” Assistant Attorney General Vance said smoothly, stepping into the sunlight. “The Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency have been investigating illegal mineral speculation and municipal bribery in this county for four months. We knew about the suppressed geological survey. What we lacked was direct eyewitness testimony linking the private development consortium to the fraudulent agricultural health citations.”

Vance held up his tablet, showing the active audio recording waveform.

“You just confirmed on federal record that your husband deliberately falsified environmental and sanitary complaints against Turner Dairy in order to trigger an illegal eminent domain seizure for commercial mining exploitation. That constitutes racketeering, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit municipal extortion.”

Brooke began to hyperventilate. “No! I didn't say that! I was just—I was exaggerating! I’m Michael’s wife, I’m not an executive in his company! You can't use this against me!”

“Your name is listed as the managing partner of Ridgeview Holdings LLC, Mrs. Miller,” Peter said with icy precision. “The shell company that received a two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar deposit from the Canadian mining syndicate three weeks ago.”

Brooke looked between Peter and the federal prosecutor, realizing the trap had closed around her neck with inescapable finality.

Her haughty, high-society arrogance shattered into pathetic desperation.

She dropped her designer purse onto the gravel, tears carving black streaks through her expensive mascara.

“Peter… please,” Brooke pleaded, taking a trembling step toward him. “You don't understand! Michael forced me to put my name on those LLC papers! He’s drowning in debt! He gambled three million dollars on commercial real estate futures in Chicago and lost everything! If that mining deal doesn't go through, the Chicago creditors are going to take our house, our cars, everything!”

Megan looked at Brooke with a mixture of disgust and pity. This was the same woman who, twenty-four hours earlier, had stood beneath the fair tents loudly mocking Megan’s clothes, her family, and her life’s work.

“You were very happy to wear the diamonds bought with that stolen money, Brooke,” Megan said quietly. “You didn't seem very forced when you were laughing at my father’s illness yesterday afternoon.”

Brooke turned to Megan, falling to her knees in the dust, clutching at Megan’s linen apron.

“Megan, I’m sorry! I’ll go on local television! I’ll tell everyone that your cheese is perfect! I’ll tell the whole town Michael lied! Just tell Peter to call off the federal prosecutor! Please, we’ll leave Veroa! We’ll sign over the supermarket to you! Just don't let them send me to prison!”

Peter stepped forward, his expression carved from stone. He took Megan’s arm, gently pulling her back from Brooke’s grasping hands.

“Get off this farm, Brooke,” Peter commanded, his voice vibrating with absolute authority. “Go home. Tell Michael to put on his best suit. Because at the County Commerce Gala tomorrow night, the entire town is going to witness the reading of the new agricultural charter.”

Brooke sobbed, scrambling back to her feet. She grabbed her fallen purse, scrambled into her Mercedes, and tore down the driveway, the tires throwing clouds of dust into the autumn sky.

Megan watched the car disappear around the bend. She turned to Peter, her heart heavy with the weight of the coming storm.

“Michael won't go down quietly, Peter,” Megan said. “He’s desperate. And when a man like that has his entire empire on the line, he’ll burn the whole valley down before he lets anyone else have it.”

Peter looked at the high ridge above the barn, where the dry autumn grass swayed in the wind.

“I know,” Peter said, his jaw hardening. “That’s why my private security team is stationing guards at every perimeter fence on your property starting right now.”

But neither Peter nor Megan anticipated just how reckless Michael Miller was willing to be.
