Chapter 11 - THE FORGED LEDGER

The sunrise over Boston Harbor was brilliant gold and crimson.
The clouds had parted, leaving the sky clean and washed of storm.
By 8:00 AM, Dr. Vance completed his morning rounds.
He smiled broadly as he looked at Leo’s updated telemetry readouts.
"He's healing faster than expected," Dr. Vance said, tucking his stethoscope into his coat. "The direct genetic transfusion gave his immune system an enormous boost. We can discharge him to home care by tomorrow afternoon."
"Home care?" I asked, looking at Adrien.
"To the Marblehead estate," Adrien said firmly. "I already have a private pediatric nursing team en route from Massachusetts General."
Adrien’s phone chimed.
He checked the display.
"The board of directors meeting begins in thirty minutes," he said.
I stood up from the chair.
I smoothed down the clean navy sweater Frank had brought from a boutique in Back Bay an hour earlier.
"I'm coming with you," I said.
Adrien looked at me, a mixture of concern and admiration in his eyes.
"Clare, you've been awake for thirty-six hours."
"And I spent five years being silenced," I replied. "I want to look every shareholder in the eye when you announce the new succession plan."
Adrien smiled.
That dark, devastatingly handsome smile that had stolen my heart a decade ago.
"Then let's go introduce the real power of Moretti Holdings."
Twenty minutes later, a motorcade of three black armored sedans pulled up to the glass tower of Moretti Tower on State Street.
Dozens of reporters and photographers were already camped outside the revolving doors.
News of Victor Moretti’s midnight arrest at Terminal Four had broken across every major television network at dawn.
MORETTI LOGISTICS SHAKEN BY FEDERAL RAID.
BILLIONAIRE TYCOON VICTOR MORETTI JAILED ON WEAPONS CHARGES.
WHERE IS ADRIEN MORETTI?
The flashes exploded like a wall of lightning as our car door opened.
Adrien stepped out first.
Immaculate in a charcoal three-piece suit, his hair swept back, looking every inch the king of the Atlantic seaboard.
Then he turned and extended his hand into the vehicle.
I took it.
I stepped out into the morning sunlight.
The cameras went wild.
"Mrs. Moretti! Is that Clare Moretti?"
"Where have you been for five years?"
"Are the rumors about secret heirs true?"
Adrien didn't answer a single question.
He wrapped his arm firmly around my waist, pulling me against his side, shielding me with his body as security parted the sea of journalists.
We rode the express elevator to the sixty-second floor.
The boardroom was dead silent when the double mahogany doors swung open.
Twenty board members sat around the forty-foot glass table.
Every one of them had a tablet displaying Victor’s arrest mugshot.
At the head of the table sat the empty chairman’s seat.
Beside it sat an empty chair where Evelyn Ward usually took minutes.
Adrien walked to the head of the table.
He didn't sit down.
He rested his palms flat on the glass, leaning forward, his gray gaze sweeping across the trembling executives.
"Good morning," Adrien said calmly.
Nobody spoke.
Several men swallowed hard.
"As you are aware," Adrien continued, "former COO Victor Moretti and former General Counsel Evelyn Ward have been relieved of their duties permanently."
He gestured toward the door.
Two federal agents walked in, carrying three heavy bankers' boxes labeled UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT EVIDENCE.
"These boxes contain seven years of embezzled shipping revenues funneled by Victor through unauthorized offshore subsidiaries," Adrien said. "Every director who voted with Victor on the terminal lease renewal last month will submit their resignation to my office by noon."
A senior director, Mr. Henderson, raised a trembling hand.
"Adrien... we didn't know about the weapons. We thought Victor was protecting corporate interests—"
"You thought you were protecting your annual bonuses," Adrien cut him off coldly.
He turned toward me.
He took my hand and pulled me to his side.
"This is Clare Moretti," Adrien announced to the room. "My wife. And the newly appointed Chairwoman of the Moretti Family Foundation."
Glares of shock rippled across the table.
"Furthermore," Adrien added, his voice filling every corner of the vast room, "a new irrevocable trust has been established. Controlling fifty-one percent of all voting shares in Moretti Shipping, Harbor Logistics, and Atlantic Freight."
He paused, letting the weight of his words settle like iron.
"The trust belongs equally to our three sons: Julian Moretti, Noah Moretti, and Leo Moretti."
Murmurs of absolute astonishment erupted around the table.
"Triplets?" someone whispered in disbelief.
May you like
"Heirs," Adrien corrected them with absolute authority. "The line is secured. The corruption is eradicated. This meeting is adjourned."
