Chapter 6: The Trial of the Golden Son

The courtroom was packed, a suffocating sea of reporters, legal aides, and curious onlookers. Preston sat at the defense table, flanking his high-priced attorney. He wore a navy suit and a practiced expression of solemn contrition. He had been coached to look like a victim of a terrible misunderstanding.
The defense attorney spent hours trying to dissect Evelyn on the stand. He questioned her emotional stability, her jealousy of her brother’s success, and suggested she was weaponizing a "simple childhood tumble" to extort her wealthy parents.
But Evelyn was immovable. She answered every question with the icy, unwavering precision of a mother protecting her child.
"I did not ask for a dime," Evelyn stated, staring directly at the jury box. "My parents offered me five million dollars in a hospital room while my daughter was bleeding, and I refused. I am not here for their money. I am here because the man sitting at that table is a predator who believes his last name is a shield. It is not."
The killing blow to Preston’s defense did not come from Evelyn, however. It came from the hotel manager, Mr. Sterling.

Defying the threats of the Whitmore legal team, Sterling took the stand. He played the security footage from the ballroom corridor. The video was silent, but the violence was deafening. The jury watched in absolute horror as the tall, broad-shouldered groom spun around in a fit of rage, shoved the tiny flower girl violently into the stone column, and then simply walked away to adjust his boutonnière while she lay bleeding on the floor.
When the video ended, the silence in the courtroom was absolute. Preston’s smug facade finally shattered. He looked toward the gallery, seeking his parents' eyes, but Arthur and Eleanor were staring at the floor. Even their money could not erase what the world had just seen.
