Chapter 6 - The Arrest in the Foyer and the Morning Market Panic

The flashing red and blue lights of four Lake Forest police cruisers lit up the tall oak trees surrounding the estate at 5:15 a.m.

Ethan was led down the grand curved staircase in metal handcuffs, his head hanging low to hide his face from the dashboard cameras. Two officers flanked him, while a third carried a heavy evidence bag filled with the crowbar, the altered corporate documents Ethan had pulled from the filing cabinets, and three fake IDs with his photo under the name ‘Evan Clark’ that he had hidden behind the bookshelf.

As the officers reached the front foyer, Ethan stopped and turned back toward me.

“Madison!” he cried out, his voice cracking with desperation. “If you let them book me, the press will find out! Horizon Tech’s stock is going to crater at the opening bell! The Series B funding will pull out! You’re destroying your own life’s work just to punish me!”

“Horizon Tech will survive this, Ethan,” I said, standing at the top of the stairs beside Noah. “Because for the first time in seven years, the company will be run by people who actually know how to build technology instead of stealing it.”

The officers pulled Ethan out the front door into the freezing morning rain. The heavy door clicked shut, leaving the grand house in total, peaceful silence.

Noah turned to me, checking his watch. “It’s 5:30. We have exactly four hours before the Nasdaq opens. The news of Ethan’s arrest will hit Bloomberg and Reuters by 7:00 a.m. We need to be in the boardroom with our crisis communications team before the morning anchors start speculating.”

“Let me change my clothes,” I said, feeling a surge of pure adrenaline replace the exhaustion in my veins. “We have an 8:00 a.m. press conference to prepare for.”

By 7:15 a.m., Noah and I were walking through the glass doors of Horizon Tech’s headquarters in Fulton Market.

The office was already buzzing with frantic energy. Junior analysts were glued to their screens, phones were ringing off the hook across the trading floor, and our Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Lin, was waiting outside the executive boardroom with three thick binders in her arms.

“Madison, thank God you’re here,” Sarah said, her voice tight with stress as she followed us into the boardroom. “The Chicago Tribune just published a breaking news alert: ‘Horizon Tech Co-Founder Ethan Cole Arrested in Lake Forest Estate Break-In Amid Millions in Alleged Embezzlement.’ Our major institutional investors are blowing up our phones. Vanguard and BlackRock have both requested an immediate emergency call with the board.”

I took my seat at the head of the conference table, sliding my laptop open. “Have the institutional investors logged into the private bridge line?”

“They’re all waiting,” Sarah nodded. “They want to know if Horizon is facing insolvency and whether the SEC is freezing our corporate operations.”

“Put them through,” I instructed.

Sarah tapped the control panel in the center of the table. A dozen corporate voices filled the room, shouting over one another in a wave of financial panic.

“Madison, is the SEC raiding your servers?!”

“What is the total capital exposure on these embezzled funds?!”

“Are our Series B warrants compromised?!”

I leaned forward, pressing the master mute button on the console, silencing the chaotic room instantly.

“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,” I said, my voice cutting through the speakers with absolute calm and unwavering authority. “This is Madison Cole, Chief Executive Officer and majority shareholder of Horizon Tech. Here are the facts.”

I let the silence hang for two seconds before delivering the strategic blow Noah and I had prepared on the flight back from Miami.

“Over the last eighteen months, former Chief Operating Officer Ethan Cole attempted to divert three point two million dollars from our discretionary vendor accounts. However, this activity was flagged by our internal audit protocols three weeks ago. Horizon Tech’s core proprietary technology, our intellectual property patents, and our primary cash reserves of eighty-four million dollars remain entirely untouched and fully secured.”

I pulled up the audited financial statements on the shared investor portal.

“Furthermore,” I continued, “Ethan Cole was officially terminated by unanimous board action last night. Noah Grant has assumed the role of interim Chief Operating Officer. We have already filed for emergency asset recovery in federal court, which will claw back one hundred percent of the diverted funds through the seizure of real estate holdings in Florida.”

The line remained silent as the institutional portfolio managers absorbed the data.

“Madison,” spoke up David Vance, the lead partner at Apex Capital, our largest venture backer. “What about the upcoming Department of Defense cybersecurity contract? Will Ethan’s arrest disqualify Horizon from federal bidding?”

“On the contrary, David,” Noah spoke into the microphone. “The federal investigators are working directly with us as cooperating witnesses. The State’s Attorney and the SEC have both praised Horizon’s internal compliance team for catching the breach and handing over the full evidentiary package. We are more transparent, more secure, and more profitable today than we were yesterday.”

A long pause stretched across the line.

“Apex Capital maintains full confidence in Madison’s leadership,” David Vance declared firmly. “We will issue a public statement of support before the market opens.”

One by one, every major institutional investor on the bridge line echoed David’s support.

When Sarah disconnected the call, she let out a massive sigh of relief, leaning against the glass wall. “The stock pre-market trading is already stabilizing. In fact... we’re up two percent on the news of Ethan’s termination.”

Noah looked at me with a rare, proud smile. “The market knows who really runs this company, Madison.”

Before I could reply, the boardroom doors swung open.

My executive assistant, Chloe, stepped in, holding a certified courier envelope with a crimson seal.

“Madison,” Chloe whispered, her eyes wide. “This was just hand-delivered from the Cook County Jail. Ethan’s criminal defense attorney sent an emergency settlement offer.”
