Chapter 6 - The Secret Mistress and the Corrupt Paralegal

By 7:00 AM on Sunday morning, Oakmont Lane looked like a full-scale tactical staging area.

Twelve burly soldiers from my artillery battery, dressed in civilian work clothes, moved through the house with military efficiency. Under the supervision of First Sergeant Miller, every single piece of Diane Keller’s velvet furniture, every gaudy gold mirror, and every tailored suit in Grant’s walk-in closet was carefully packed into heavy-duty plastic totes and loaded onto two flatbed trailers.

Not a single item was damaged. Every piece was inventoried, photographed, and cataloged to ensure zero civil liability.

While the soldiers worked, I sat in my grandfather’s reclaimed study on the second floor, reviewing the digital forensic files that Detective Hayes had forwarded to my secure terminal.

The deeper the police dug into Grant’s devices, the uglier the truth became.

Grant’s scheme had not originated three weeks ago. It had been meticulously planned for over nine months.

In a folder labeled “Project Phoenix” on Grant’s encrypted cloud drive, investigators uncovered an entire dossier outlining how he and his mother intended to dismantle my life.

Grant was having an ongoing affair with Chloe Briggs, the paralegal who forged the deed. But Chloe wasn't just his mistress; she was an accomplice who had been promised a thirty-percent cut of the estate’s liquid equity once Oakmont Lane was subdivided and sold to a commercial developer.

In text messages between Grant and Chloe dating back to last winter, Grant wrote:

“Natalie’s battalion is scheduled for a joint training rotation in Germany next spring. Once she’s boots-on-the-ground overseas, Diane will file the emergency possession petition in Raleigh. Natalie won't be able to contest it from Europe due to operational communication blackouts. By the time she gets back, the house will be transferred to our LLC, the equity will be cashed out, and she’ll have no legal standing.”

Chloe replied: “Make sure Diane serves her publicly before she leaves. Break her confidence. If she feels humiliated in front of her commander, she’ll be too proud to fight back in court.”

I stared at the screen, my jaw clenched so tightly my teeth ached.

They hadn't just tried to steal my property; they had actively tried to exploit my military service, using my deployment and dedication to this country as a weapon to strip away my home while I was overseas defending others.

At that moment, Detective Hayes called my phone.

“Natalie, you need to see this,” Hayes said, her tone urgent. “Chloe Briggs just broke down completely during her second interview. She handed over a series of audio recordings she made on her phone during her planning meetings with Grant and Diane at North Ridge Country Club.”

“What’s on the tapes, Sarah?”

“Diane Keller explicitly detailing how she planned to use the stolen HELOC funds to pay off a judge’s campaign fund to ensure the divorce settlement went in Grant’s favor,” Hayes revealed. “This isn't just state fraud anymore, Natalie. The FBI’s Public Corruption and Financial Crimes Squad just took over the case. Grant and Diane are looking at federal RICO and racketeering charges.”

I looked out the second-story window. Down below, First Sergeant Miller was directing the flatbed truck down the driveway, carrying the very last box of Diane’s belongings off my property.

“Let them face the full weight of it, Sarah,” I said coldly. “Every single ounce.”
