Chapter 4 - The Chaos In The OB-GYN Waiting Room

Back in the Richmond clinic, the private examination room had descended into a violent, screaming battlefield.
“Who is he?!” Victor roared, lunging toward the exam bed, his hands balled into tight fists, his face mottled with purple rage. “Whose bastard are you carrying in your belly, Naomi?!”
“Victor! Stop it! Don't touch me!” Naomi shrieked, scrambling off the opposite side of the bed, clutching the white sheet around her trembling body.
Walter Reynolds had stepped between his son and the woman, his face pale with aristocratic horror. “Robert! Are you certain? Is there any possibility of an error in the equipment? An anomaly?!”
“Walter, I have delivered over four thousand babies in thirty years,” Dr. Sterling replied coldly, removing his latex gloves and dropping them into the biohazard bin. “The ultrasound does not lie about twenty-four weeks of skeletal development. The child was conceived in early May. If Victor was out of the country, he is not the biological father. I must ask you all to lower your voices or I will have clinic security escort you out.”
Samantha stood in the corner, her phone lowered, staring at Naomi with eyes full of venomous hatred.
“You filthy, calculating little gold-digger,” Samantha hissed, stepping around her father. “You knew all along! You targeted my brother when you found out you were pregnant by some bar trash, didn't you?! You made us celebrate! You made my mother buy thousands of dollars of heirlooms!”
Miriam Reynolds let out a choked, strangled wail from her armchair. The leather-bound baby journal slipped from her manicured fingers, hitting the linoleum floor with a heavy thud. She clutched her chest, hyperventilating, her pearl necklace trembling against her throat.
“My grandson...” Miriam wept, rocking back and forth. “The Reynolds heir... my baby boy...”
“There is no Reynolds heir, Mom!” Victor screamed, turning on his mother with wild, bloodshot eyes. “She played us! She played all of us!”
He turned back to Naomi, who was now cornered against the sink, weeping hysterically, the polished facade of the sweet, submissive corporate mistress entirely stripped away.
“Tell me his name, Naomi,” Victor said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, guttural whisper. “Tell me who you slept with before I destroy your entire life in this city.”
Naomi wiped the mascara running down her cheeks, her expression suddenly twisting from fear into a vicious, cornered malice.
“You want to know, Victor?!” she screamed back, laughing through her tears. “You really want to know who the father is?!”
“Tell me!”
“Julian Hayes!” Naomi shouted. “It’s Julian Hayes!”
The entire room froze as if struck by lightning.
Julian Hayes was the CEO of Apex Civil Engineering—the direct, bitter commercial rival of Reynolds Engineering who had beaten Walter for the five-hundred-million-dollar state transit contract six months ago.
“Julian dumped me the second I told him I was pregnant,” Naomi spat, glaring at Victor with pure disgust. “He offered me fifty thousand dollars to get rid of it. But then you... you arrogant, pathetic idiot... you came sniffing around my office, bragging about how much money your family had, complaining that your wife could only give you daughters, whining about needing a son to prove yourself to your daddy!”
Victor felt the floor tilt beneath his feet.
“You were so desperate for a boy to show off to your snobbish family that you believed every single word I said!” Naomi laughed, tears streaming down her face. “You didn't even ask for a blood test! You bought me a penthouse! You bought me diamonds! You threw away your wife and your own children for a boy that belongs to the man who took your company’s biggest client!”
Victor’s knees gave out. He collapsed onto the vinyl examination stool, grabbing his head in his hands, groaning in pure, agonizing torment.
The son he had bragged about at the divorce table...
