Chapter 6 - The Broken Ledger

Working inside Larkin's private suite was an entirely different kind of battlefield. The spacious office was lined with mahogany bookshelves, floor-to-ceiling glass looking out over the city skyline, and a private wet bar. Penelope had her own sleek desk positioned opposite Larkin’s, where she had unrestricted access to the syndicate’s highest-level encrypted servers.

For two weeks, the dynamic between them was taut, electric, and utterly relentless. Larkin challenged her with the syndicate’s most complex logistics problems; Penelope dismantled them in hours with surgical precision. But beneath the professional exterior, the air in the room was thick with unspoken attraction. Every glance, every hand brushing over a file, was charged with tension.

Late on a rainy Thursday night, Penelope was alone at her desk, the office illuminated only by the glow of her dual monitors and the city lights outside.

She was cross-referencing three years of offshore shell transfers when she noticed an anomaly. It was hidden behind seven layers of dummy corporations in Panama and Cyprus, buried in fractional routing fees.

Twelve million dollars.

Siphoned off systematically over thirty-six months. Diverted into accounts tied to an untraceable paramilitary supplier based out of New Jersey.

Penelope’s heart pounded against her ribs. She dug deeper, tracing IP signatures and encryption keys. The authorized sign-off hadn’t come from Larkin. It had come from an override code registered to Thomas Dixon.

She enlarged the screen, her breath catching. The weapons purchased weren’t for syndicate expansion. They were stockpiled at a warehouse near Pier 9—enough automatic rifles, tactical gear, and explosives to launch a full-scale coup against Larkin’s personal inner guard.

"What did you find?"

Penelope jumped slightly. Larkin had entered silently, carrying two crystal glasses of whiskey. He had discarded his suit jacket, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark ink of a syndicate dragon winding around his skin.

"Look at this," she whispered, turning the monitor toward him.

Larkin leaned over her shoulder. His chest brushed against her back, his clean scent of cedarwood and bergamot enveloping her senses. As his eyes tracked the financial flow across the screen, his face hardened into carved stone.

"Thomas," Larkin muttered, his voice dropping into a deadly register. "He’s preparing an internal strike."
