Chapter 18 - Poppy's Eighth BirthdayAt 12:01 a.m., the archive opened.

Charles entered the password.

Access denied.

Again.

Denied.

Across Raven Hill, Poppy sat in front of a secure laptop.

A single question appeared.

WHAT IS HOME?

She looked at Sadie.

“Do I type it?”

Sadie nodded.

Poppy entered:

WHOEVER COMES BACK FOR YOU.

The screen changed.

WELCOME, POPPY.

Charles's stolen password had failed because Elias built the system around two factors.

The words.

And Elias's bloodline.

Poppy placed her finger on a biometric reader recovered from Greyhaven.

The archive unlocked.

Thousands of files appeared.

Transactions.

Names.

Videos.

Evidence spanning thirty years.

Maeve whispered:

“Oh my God.”

The Crown was finished.

Federal teams began simultaneous raids.

Charles's aircraft was seized.

His accounts froze.

But Charles himself vanished.

Again.

Poppy stared at the screen.

“Did we win?”

Ronan answered carefully.

“We did something important.”

“That means no.”

Sadie smiled.

“It means grown-ups make simple answers unnecessarily complicated.”

Poppy nodded.

“So yes.”

“Yes.”

At nine that morning, Raven Hill transformed.

Security remained everywhere.

So did federal agents.

But there were balloons.

Not black.

Poppy had won that argument.

And in the paddock stood a tiny chestnut pony wearing a yellow ribbon.

Sadie stared at Ronan.

“You actually bought it.”

“I keep promises.”

“You promised before consulting me.”

“That sounds like a technical distinction.”

“Ronan.”

Poppy screamed with happiness.

Sadie watched her daughter run toward the pony.

Then sighed.

“You're impossible.”

Ronan kissed her temple.

“You married me.”

“I was emotionally compromised.”

The birthday party was small.

Family only.

Eleanor.

Maeve.

June.

Bell.

Wesley.

Daniel Hawthorne arrived under federal protection.

Poppy received too many gifts.

She ate too much cake.

And for almost three hours, nothing terrible happened.

Then Eleanor stood.

She held a small box.

“For Poppy.”

Inside was a silver bracelet.

Attached was Elias's falcon.

Poppy's eyes filled.

“My daddy's?”

Eleanor nodded.

Poppy hugged her.

Then she went to Ronan.

“Can you put it on?”

His hands shook slightly as he fastened it.

Poppy looked at the falcon.

Then at him.

“I have two dads.”

Ronan stopped.

Sadie covered her mouth.

Poppy continued.

“One couldn't stay.”

She touched Ronan's hand.

“One came back.”

Ronan pulled her against him.

Nobody in the room pretended not to cry.

The explosion came twenty seconds later.

Windows shattered.

Ronan covered Poppy with his body.

Sadie hit the floor.

Smoke filled the ballroom.

Security shouted.

The explosion had not come from inside Raven Hill.

It came from the front gate.

A burning vehicle blocked the entrance.

Then Maeve's phone rang.

Charles.

She answered.

“It's over.”

Charles laughed.

“No.”

“Your archive is gone.”

“I don't need it.”

“What do you want?”

“Something the Cains took from me.”

His voice became cold.

“My father.”

Daniel Hawthorne went pale.

Charles continued.

“Send him outside.”

“No,” Maeve said.

“Then I start killing people in Ashport until you do.”

The call ended.

Daniel stood.

“I'll go.”

Ronan blocked him.

“No.”

“This began with my family.”

“And it ends without us feeding you to your son.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“You don't understand Charles.”

Ronan's expression hardened.

“No.”

“I understand him perfectly.”

He looked at Poppy.

“Men like Charles think loving someone gives them ownership.”

Then he looked at Sadie.

“I learned better.”

Outside, sirens approached.

Inside, Poppy's birthday cake lay overturned across the floor.

She stared at it.

Then whispered:

“He ruined my cake.”

Ronan looked at her.

“Yes.”

Poppy's eyes narrowed.

“I don't like him.”

May you like

Sadie almost smiled.

“That makes all of us.”
