Chapter 11 - A House Built On Second Chances

Luca smiled, a slow, breathtaking expression that completely changed his severe features.
He handed me the manila envelope.
I opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was a property deed. It was for the beautiful, completely remodeled guest cottage that sat on the edge of the Moretti estate gardens.
The name on the deed was Mary Reed. My mother.
“I went to Indiana yesterday while you were sleeping,” Luca explained quietly. “I had a very long talk with Mary. I explained that I needed her daughter here in Chicago. And to my surprise, she agreed to relocate.”
I looked at my mother, who was currently instructing Marco to carry a massive potted fern.
“You agreed to move?” I asked her, completely stunned. “You refused to leave that house for ten years!”
My mother waved a hand dismissively. “Mr. Moretti makes a very compelling argument, Emma. Besides, the cottage doesn’t have stairs. And he said I could redesign the rose garden. The landscaping here is atrocious.”
I burst out laughing, tears of pure joy streaming down my face.
I turned back to Luca.
“You bought my mother a house?”
“I bought my mother-in-law a house,” Luca corrected smoothly.
The air left my lungs.
Luca reached into his pocket.
He didn’t pull out a diamond ring.
He pulled out a heavy, braided silver bracelet.
I recognized it immediately. It was Anna’s. The one Vanessa had tried to steal from the clinic. The one that had the initials A.M. engraved on the inside.
Luca took my hand.
“When Anna died, I locked this away,” Luca said softly, running his thumb over the silver metal. “I thought I would never have a reason to take it out again. I thought my life was over.”
He looked deeply into my eyes.
“But Anna didn’t leave me alone. She left me Leo. And fate brought you to my door to save us both.”
He gently clasped the silver bracelet around my wrist. It felt heavy, cool, and perfectly right.
“I don’t want you as my nurse, Emma,” Luca whispered, stepping into my space. “I want you as my partner. I want you to be a mother to Leo. I want you to be my wife.”
The world stopped spinning.
All the chaos, the poison, the mafia wars, the lies—they all faded away, leaving only the man standing in front of me. A man who loved fiercely and protected fiercely.
“Yes,” I breathed. “Yes, Luca.”
He didn’t hesitate. He pulled me in by the waist and kissed me deeply, right there on the front steps, in the morning sunlight.
Behind us, Leo cheered loudly.
“Does this mean you’re staying?!” Leo yelled, running over and hugging my legs.
Luca pulled back from the kiss, resting his forehead against mine, smiling down at his son.
“Yeah, buddy,” Luca said. “She’s staying forever.”
“Excellent,” my mother called out from the driveway. “Now that that’s settled, someone tell Marco he’s holding my fern upside down!”
We both laughed, a sound of pure, unadulterated happiness that echoed across the estate.
The dark clouds that had hung over the Moretti family for a decade had finally broken.
Later that evening, after my mother was settled into her beautiful new cottage, Luca, Leo, and I sat on the back patio.
The sky was painted in brilliant strokes of orange and purple.
Leo was sitting between us on the outdoor sofa, fast asleep, his head resting on my lap, his feet thrown over Luca’s legs.
Luca reached out and took my hand, his thumb tracing the silver bracelet on my wrist.
“Are you sure about this, Emma?” Luca asked softly, looking out at the gardens. “My life… it’s complicated. It always will be.”
I looked down at the sleeping boy, then at the man who had risked everything to protect him.
“I’m a nurse, Luca,” I smiled. “I’m very good at dealing with complicated things.”
He chuckled, lifting my hand and kissing my knuckles.
“I love you, Emma Reed.”

“I love you too, Luca Moretti.”
