Chapter 6 - The Golden Mistress Begins to Rust

Madison Vale’s penthouse in the Gold Coast was in a state of utter disarray.

Designer luggage, garment bags filled with haute couture dresses, and shoe boxes from Jimmy Choo were strewn across the white plush carpeting. Madison stood in the center of her walk-in closet, frantically stuffing diamond jewelry, designer watches, and luxury handbags into an oversized Louis Vuitton duffel bag.

Her phone on the vanity island was ringing continuously.

The caller ID flashed: DANIEL ELLISON (Call #14).

Madison silenced the call with a vicious flick of her manicured finger. “Pathetic loser,” she muttered under her breath.

Suddenly, the heavy front door of the penthouse burst open with a loud bang.

Madison jumped, letting out a sharp shriek, clutching a diamond tennis bracelet to her chest as Daniel Ellison strode into the apartment.

He looked completely unhinged. His Brioni suit was crumpled and stained with coffee, his tie was gone, his hair was disheveled, and his bloodshot eyes darted around the apartment with wild, desperate fury.

“You’re ignoring my calls,” Daniel said, his voice raw, raspy from screaming at bank managers all morning.

Madison quickly stepped back toward the safety of the closet island, sliding the bracelet into her purse. “Daniel, how did you get in here? The building security wasn't supposed to let you up.”

“I pay the master lease on this building, Madison!” Daniel shouted, taking heavy, erratic steps toward her. “Or rather, my corporate account did! What are you doing? Are you packing?”

Madison let out a cold, humorless laugh, dropping all pretense of the sweet, understanding soulmate she had played over the last six months. “What does it look like I’m doing, Daniel? I’m leaving. I have a flight to Miami in three hours.”

“Leaving?” Daniel’s voice cracked in utter disbelief. “We had plans! You told me on Sunday that we were a team! You told me you were the only woman in Chicago who truly understood my vision!”

“That was when I thought you actually had a company!” Madison snarled, zipping up her suitcase with a violent yank. “I thought I was aligning myself with a billionaire industrialist! I didn't sign up to be the mistress of an indebted fraud whose entire lifestyle was subsidized by his quiet little wife!”

The words hit Daniel like physical blows, staggering him backward. “I gave you everything! I bought you that Cartier necklace! I bought you that car parked in the garage! I paid two hundred thousand dollars for your public relations agency’s retainer!”

“With Claire’s money!” Madison laughed in his face, her tone dripping with venomous mockery. “Do you have any idea how humiliating this is for me? The entire North Shore is laughing at us! Page Six just ran an article calling you the 'Billionaire on an Allowance'! My high-end clients are dropping my firm left and right because they don't want to be associated with an Ellison bankruptcy!”

“It’s not bankruptcy!” Daniel yelled, his face turning purple with humiliation. “It’s a temporary liquidity restructuring! Once I meet with the board tomorrow, we will force Claire to settle! The courts will grant me half of her marital assets!”

Madison stared at him as if he were the stupidest creature on earth.

“You signed an ironclad prenuptial agreement with Vance-Crest nine years ago, Daniel,” Madison said, her eyes flashing with cold pity. “My lawyer looked over the public filings this morning. You waived all rights to her ancestral trusts, her private capital funds, and any business entities capitalized by Vance equity. You leave this marriage with the clothes on your back and about eighty million dollars in personal corporate guarantees.”

Daniel reached out to grab her arm. “Madison, stay. We can figure this out. I have other contacts in New York—”

“Don't touch me!” Madison screeched, yanking her arm away and grabbing her heavy duffel bag. “Get out of my way, Daniel. The car is downstairs. Go back to your mother’s house and cry into your empty whiskey glasses. We are finished.”

She pushed past him, her high heels clicking rapidly across the hardwood floor toward the foyer.

“Madison!” Daniel screamed down the hallway. “You won't get away with this! I made you!”

The front door slammed shut, echoing through the empty, cavernous penthouse.

May you like

Daniel stood alone in the hallway, the silence pressing down on him like a tomb. For the first time in his pampered, arrogant life, the reality of his absolute destruction settled into his bones.

He had traded a queen for a reflection in a puddle, and now the water had dried up, leaving him stranded in the mud.
