Chapter 12 - THE BOARDROOM

Z

At nine the next morning, fourteen members of Valiant Holdings' board sat around a table worth more than most houses.

Adriana Cole sat six seats from Beckett.

Red suit.

Calm expression.

Perfect posture.

Violet watched remotely from Beckett's penthouse.

She hadn't wanted involvement.

Then Beckett had handed her an encrypted tablet.

"If they're discussing our daughter, you deserve to hear it."

So she listened.

Adriana opened.

"Nobody is questioning Beckett's achievements."

"That's usually what people say immediately before questioning my achievements," Beckett replied.

Several directors shifted.

Adriana smiled.

"We are discussing stability."

"My daughter is six weeks old. She's remarkably stable considering adults twice my age are apparently frightened of her."

One director cleared his throat.

"This isn't personal."

"It became personal when someone hired investigators to follow my child's mother."

Adriana's smile disappeared.

Beckett placed documents on the table.

"Marcus Pell. Charles Pierce. Media leak payments."

Adriana's face paled.

"You can't prove—"

"Bank records."

Silence.

"You compromised confidential family information to influence corporate succession."

Adriana stood.

"This company cannot be governed emotionally."

Beckett looked around the table.

"My father taught you all that line."

Nobody answered.

"He taught me too."

Beckett rose.

"For twelve years, I believed him."

He looked toward the windows.

"I built factories. Expanded distribution. Acquired competitors. Doubled our research budget."

He paused.

"And I was proud of the fact that nothing mattered more than this company."

Violet felt her throat tighten.

"Then eight days ago, I met my daughter."

Adriana rolled her eyes faintly.

Beckett saw.

"So yes," he continued, "my priorities changed."

He leaned against the table.

"If that makes me unfit to lead, vote."

Silence.

"Right now."

One director frowned.

"Beckett—"

"Vote."

Adriana looked confident again.

"Fine."

The secretary called the motion.

Remove Beckett Valiant as CEO pending review.

Votes began.

Adriana: yes.

Two others: yes.

Then no.

No.

No.

The remaining votes followed.

The motion failed eleven to three.

Adriana stared.

Beckett didn't smile.

He slid another document across the table.

"Next motion."

She looked down.

Termination for breach of fiduciary duty.

"You're firing me?"

"I'm giving the board the opportunity."

The vote passed thirteen to one.

Adriana went white.

"You'll regret this."

Beckett's expression remained calm.

"No."

Security escorted her out.

The meeting should have ended there.

Instead Beckett remained standing.

"One more matter."

He held Henry's codicil.

"My daughter will not become a corporate weapon."

A director began to speak.

Beckett lifted a hand.

"I'm restructuring my personal voting trust."

Gasps.

Violet sat forward.

Beckett had not told her this.

"Celeste's inherited voting interest will be placed under independent stewardship until she is thirty."

One director stared.

"You're giving up family control?"

"I'm protecting my child from it."

Violet covered her mouth.

Back in the boardroom, Beckett finished.

"My father spent his life confusing legacy with ownership."

His voice lowered.

"I won't."

When Beckett returned home that evening, Violet was waiting.

He loosened his tie.

"You watched."

"All of it."

"Good."

"You didn't tell me about the trust."

"I didn't need your permission to give up my control."

"No."

She walked closer.

"But you were thinking about Celeste."

"Yes."

"You could lose billions."

"Possibly."

"Does that bother you?"

Beckett considered.

"Less than missing bath time."

Violet laughed through sudden tears.

"Don't."

"What?"

"Keep doing things that make it difficult to stay angry."

He became very still.

"Violet."

She shook her head.

"I'm scared."

"Of me?"

"Of us."

He said nothing.

"If I let myself believe you've changed and I'm wrong..."

"You won't survive being hurt again."

She nodded.

Beckett stepped closer but didn't touch her.

"Then don't believe me yet."

Violet looked up.

"What?"

"Watch me."

His voice was steady.

"One day at a time."

He glanced toward Celeste's room.

"I don't need you to trust who I say I am."

He looked back at Violet.

"Let me prove it."

For the first time, he wasn't asking Violet to come back.

He was offering to earn the right to be asked.

May you like

And that night, after Beckett fed Celeste and fell asleep in the rocking chair with a burp cloth still over his shoulder, Violet stood in the doorway for a long time.

Then she quietly placed a blanket over him.
