Chapter 4 - The Gala of Knives and the Stolen Spotlight

The grand ballroom of the Ashford Hotel was an ocean of crystal chandeliers, black-tie attire, and glittering vintage champagne. Over four hundred of Chicago’s most influential power brokers—judges, politicians, developers, and old-money dynasties—mingled beneath floral arches.

At the base of the double sweeping staircase, flashbulbs exploded in rhythmic waves as guests made their entrance.

Vanessa Whitmore stood near the bottom step, holding a flute of Cristal, radiant in her pearl-gray designer gown. Her father, Charles Whitmore, a silver-haired patrician with cold gray eyes, was laughing with a state supreme court judge.

“Vanessa, darling,” Charles murmured, leaning in slightly. “Did you handle the situation upstairs?”

“She’s in pieces, Father,” Vanessa replied with a smug, elegant smile. “She won’t leave the suite. Adrien will make an appearance alone, offer some vague excuse about her sudden illness, and by tomorrow morning the press will be speculating about an annulment.”

“Good,” Charles whispered. “With Daniel Carter’s daughter out of his ear, Adrien will stop digging into the legacy freight accounts. We finalize the port merger on Monday.”

Suddenly, the chatter at the top of the grand staircase went dead quiet.

The string quartet lost its tempo. Heads turned in unison toward the entrance archway.

Standing at the top of the marble steps was Adrien Moretti. His charcoal custom tuxedo was immaculate, his posture radiating absolute, unyielding authority. But what paralyzed the room was the woman on his arm.

I didn’t look down at my feet. I held my head high, my shoulders back, the midnight-blue silk gown cascading down my silhouette like dark liquid velvet. The diamond earrings caught the chandelier light, throwing dazzling prisms across my collarbones. I wore no heavy theatrical makeup—only my natural features, sharp, striking, and entirely unbothered by the stares.

A photographer in the front row lowered his lens in pure shock before frantically raising it again. The sound of camera shutters exploded like rapid machine-gun fire.

“She looks like royalty,” a high-society matriarch whispered audibly from the terrace.

“Where did he find that gown? The lines are flawless.”

“Look at how he holds her.”

Adrien didn’t look at the cameras. He kept his hand firmly on the small of my back, his eyes locked on mine with open, unashamed adoration as we descended the grand staircase step by step. Every flashbulb that went off felt like another bullet shattering the web of lies Vanessa had spent two months weaving.

When our feet hit the ballroom floor, the crowd naturally parted. Adrien guided me directly toward Table One.

Vanessa’s champagne flute shook so violently that a drop spilled onto her pristine gray skirt. Charles Whitmore’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of guarded panic.

“Charles. Vanessa,” Adrien greeted them smoothly, stopping two feet away. His voice carried just enough weight to silence the surrounding tables.

“Adrien… Emily,” Charles stammered, extending a hand that Adrien completely ignored. “You look… stunning tonight, my dear. We were told you might not make it down.”

“Really?” I asked, meeting Vanessa’s panicked gaze with a calm, freezing smile. “Who told you that, Charles? Vanessa?”

Vanessa swallowed hard, her throat bobbing. “Emily, I only thought—”

“Vanessa was kind enough to give me some fashion advice upstairs,” I said, loud enough for three city council members and two newspaper columnists to hear clearly. “She told me that wearing something chosen with love by my husband would make me a punchline. But looking around this room, it seems the only joke here is the money your family spent trying to buy silence.”

Charles’s face turned an ugly shade of mottled red. “What is the meaning of this insolence?”

“It means,” Adrien stepped forward, his broad frame blocking the light from the chandeliers, casting a dark shadow over Charles, “that your retainer with Bellweather Media has been terminated. And the Department of Justice has just executed a search warrant on your private storage docks in Gary, Indiana.”
