Chapter 6 - Arthur Attempts To Blackmail My Firm’s Managing Director

Desperation makes arrogant men extraordinarily stupid.

Instead of hiring a top-tier criminal defense attorney and preparing for the legal storm, Arthur Hayes decided to play high-stakes corporate blackmail.

At 2:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon, Arthur walked into the marble lobby of Apex Forensic Global. He had slicked back his hair and put on his best charcoal suit, attempting to exude the aura of an important, wronged businessman.

He marched up to the security desk and demanded an immediate audience with Marcus Vance, the firm’s Managing Director.

“Tell Mr. Vance that Arthur Hayes is here,” Arthur declared loudly. “I am the father of his senior analyst, Rachel Hayes, and I am here to expose severe corporate misconduct within his firm.”

Rather than having security throw him out onto the street, Marcus Vance instructed the guards to escort Arthur directly into his private corner office on the fortieth floor.

I was sitting in the adjacent observation room behind a one-way acoustic mirror, accompanied by Agent Miller.

Arthur strode into Marcus’s office with supreme confidence, casually unbuttoning his suit jacket and sitting down in the leather armchair across from Marcus’s massive glass desk.

“Mr. Vance,” Arthur began, leaning forward with a conspiratorial smirk. “I’m going to save your firm from a massive public relations catastrophe.”

Marcus didn't offer a handshake. He leaned back in his chair, folding his hands over his desk. “Is that so, Mr. Hayes? Enlighten me.”

Arthur reached into his jacket and pulled out a manila envelope, tossing it onto the desk.

“Inside that folder,” Arthur said smugly, “is evidence that your senior lead analyst, my daughter Rachel, has been using proprietary corporate databases to conduct illegal personal investigations against her own family members due to a domestic grudge. She is fabricating financial records to extort me.”

Marcus didn't open the folder. He didn't even look at it. “Go on.”

“I am a well-respected figure in the municipal contracting community,” Arthur lied smoothly. “If this gets out—that Apex Forensics allows rogue junior analysts to weaponize corporate surveillance against innocent citizens—your firm will lose its state audit licenses. It will destroy your reputation.”

“And what is your proposed solution, Mr. Hayes?” Marcus asked, his voice completely calm.

Arthur smiled, believing he had the upper hand. “Very simple. You terminate Rachel’s employment immediately for gross ethical misconduct. You purge all records regarding Ironclad Logistics and my private accounts from your servers. And in exchange, I won't file a fifty-million-dollar tortious interference lawsuit against Apex.”

Marcus looked at Arthur for five seconds in absolute, dead silence.

Then, Marcus let out a soft, amused chuckle that caught Arthur completely off guard.

“Mr. Hayes,” Marcus said, reaching over to tap the intercom on his desk. “Do you know what this office is?”

Arthur blinked. “What?”

“This office is a certified secure federal interview facility,” Marcus explained.

The side door to the office clicked open. Agent Miller and two armed federal marshals stepped into the room.

Arthur jumped out of his chair, backing away toward the wall. “What is this?! What’s going on?!”

Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a silver badge and a thick federal warrant from his jacket.

“Arthur William Hayes,” Agent Miller announced. “You are under arrest for federal witness tampering, attempted extortion, grand larceny, and twelve counts of felony money laundering under Title 18 of the United States Code.”

Arthur’s face contorted in sheer terror. “Tampering?! I was having a private conversation with a corporate executive!”

“A conversation that was digitally recorded with two federal agents present in the adjoining room,” Marcus added coldly. “You tried to blackmail a managing director of a federal contracting firm into destroying Grand Jury evidence, Arthur. You didn't save your reputation. You just added ten years to your federal sentence.”

The marshals stepped forward, grabbed Arthur’s arms, forced them behind his back, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they turned him toward the door, Arthur caught sight of me standing by the glass partition.

“Rachel!” Arthur screamed, his voice echoing down the executive hallway as employees turned to watch. “Rachel, stop them! I’m your father! Tell them it’s a mistake! RACHEL!”

I didn't utter a single word. I simply watched as the elevator doors closed on him, removing Arthur Hayes from my life in chains.
