Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Recording

Before Chloe could crawl toward Daniel to plead her case, the ballroom lights dimmed slightly. The sound system emitted a soft click, followed by the hiss of an audio recording being routed through the speakers.

"What is this?" Chloe cried out, her head snapping toward the ceiling. "Stop it! Turn it off! This is illegal! You’re recording people without consent!"

"In the State of Ohio, Chloe, one-party consent is the law," Maya replied calmly from the podium. "And this conversation took place in a public coffee shop on High Street exactly three weeks ago, when you called Jessi to announce your grand appearance at her wedding."

The audio played through the hall with crystalline clarity. Chloe’s sharp, haughty voice echoed off the timber rafters:

CHLOE’S VOICE (RECORDED): "Listen to me, Jessica. I am doing you a massive favor by attending this little wedding of yours. Daniel’s business partners will be watching my social calendar, and it looks terrible if I’m not pictured at my eldest daughter’s nuptials. But let’s get one thing straight: I don't want your father walking you down the aisle alone. It looks pathetic and poor. Daniel and I will walk you down the aisle. We will pay the venue bill so you don't look like a charity case, and in exchange, you will tell everyone that we’ve always been close. If your father makes a scene, I will ensure Daniel has him fired from his freight job within forty-eight hours. Daniel knows the CEO of his logistics company personally. Do you understand me?"

The entire ballroom erupted into shouts of indignation.

"Despicable!" shouted Marcus’s father, Dr. Robert Cole, a distinguished surgeon known throughout Columbus for his integrity. Dr. Cole stood up from the family table, his face thunderous. "Luca Davies is twice the man you or your husband will ever be! He raised that extraordinary young woman while you were shopping in Paris on stolen money!"

Marcus stepped forward, placing his arm securely around Jessi’s waist. He looked down at Chloe, who was still trembling on the floor.

"When I asked Jessi to marry me," Marcus said into the microphone, his voice thick with emotion, "I didn't fall in love with her because of a social pedigree or a designer dress. I fell in love with her because she has the biggest heart, the fiercest loyalty, and the strongest character of any person I’ve ever met. And every single good thing in her comes from the man who stayed. It comes from Luca."

The room burst into spontaneous, deafening applause. Guests rose from their seats, giving Luca an ovation that echoed through the entire country club.

I stood there, tears finally spilling freely over my eyelashes, running down my weathered cheeks. All those years of cold winter mornings, all those nights of skipping meals so my girls could have new winter coats, all the quiet prayers I whispered in the dark wondering if I was doing enough—in that single moment, every drop of sweat, every blister, and every sleepless hour was validated.

Chloe scrambled to her feet, her mascara running in dark, jagged streaks down her cheeks. Her expensive hair styling had collapsed into a disheveled mess. She looked like a wild animal cornered by the light of truth.

"You think you’ve won?" Chloe screamed, pointing a trembling, diamond-encrusted finger at Jessi, then at Maya, Clara, Sophia, Lily, and Daisy. "You’re nothing! You’re just the daughters of a broke dock worker! You’ll spend the rest of your lives struggling in mediocrity while I live in a ten-thousand-square-foot mansion!"

"Not anymore, you won't," Daniel Sterling said coldly.

He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a number on speaker.

"Arthur?" Daniel said into the phone, speaking to his senior corporate counsel. "This is Daniel. Freeze every joint account, credit line, and trust authorization associated with Chloe Sterling immediately. Notify the Dublin police department that we are filing criminal embezzlement and forgery charges against her first thing Monday morning. And draft the divorce petition. Full fault. Total abandonment of marital assets."

Daniel hung up the phone without waiting for a reply. He cast one final, disgust-filled glance at Chloe, turned on his heel, and walked out of the ballroom through the side exit, leaving his luxury sports car keys on the table.

Chloe watched him leave, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly like a fish out of water.
