Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Brooklyn

The phone tap recorded three minutes after Clara left the main foyer revealed everything.

Clara had not called her father. She had called Donato Moretti directly, her voice hysterical as she informed him that Victor knew about Mercer, that the maid was alive, and that Victor was systematically severing his public ties.

Moretti’s response on the recording was short and brutal: "Stay at the club. I am sending two men to take care of the maid before she talks to the federal prosecutors."

By 11:00 PM, the gala was still underway, but Victor and Lena had slipped out through the rear service exit of the Metropolitan Club, entering the waiting Bentley driven by Dmitri.

The car moved swiftly across the Manhattan Bridge, heading toward an industrial district near the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

"Where are we going?" Lena asked, looking out at the dark, rain-slicked warehouses passing by the window.

"Moretti expects his hitmen to target your apartment tonight," Victor said, checking the action on a sleek black pistol before tucking it into his shoulder holster. "Instead, we are taking his primary distribution center in Brooklyn off the board."

"Is this safe?" Lena asked, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was still wearing the black velvet dress, though she had wrapped a black wool coat over her shoulders.

Victor looked at her, his expression softening slightly. "With me, Miss Hart, you are never entirely safe. But you will always be protected."

The Bentley pulled into a dark alleyway behind a sprawling, windowless brick warehouse near the docks. Three other black SUVs were already parked in the shadows, occupied by twelve of Victor’s most trusted men, all heavily armed.

"Stay in the car with Dmitri," Victor ordered, opening his door.

"No," Lena said suddenly, reaching out and grabbing his forearm.

Victor paused, looking down at her hand on his sleeve.

"Moretti’s men know what your cars look like," Lena said, her mind working rapidly through the logistics of service entryways she had learned over years of working high-end events. "If they have spotters on the roof, they saw you pull into this alley three minutes ago. The rear service doors in these old Brooklyn buildings always have dual-latch locks. If they're engaged from the inside, you can't breach them without explosives, which gives them time to burn their records."

Victor stared at her, impressed despite the tension of the moment. "And how do you know this?"

"The Grandeur used the same architectural layout for its dry-goods storage," Lena said, her voice growing stronger. "There is always a secondary ventilation shaft near the loading dock bay. It's wide enough for a person to reach through and release the internal manual latch."

Victor looked at Dmitri, then back at Lena. "You're telling me you can open the door from the inside?"

"If you cover me," Lena said simply.

Victor looked at her for five long seconds—evaluating the quiet steel in the eyes of a woman who had spent her life being overlooked by men like him.

"Dmitri," Victor commanded. "Cover her. If a single hair on her head is harmed, do not bother coming back."
