Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Deceit – When Wealth Can’t Buy the Truth

The penthouse medical suite on the fiftieth floor of the Grand Regency Tower was illuminated by soft, amber lighting. Outside, the Chicago blizzard raged against the reinforced glass, but inside, the air was thick with the scent of lavender, eucalyptus, and roasted chicken broth.
Dr. Arthur Evans, my personal family physician for two decades, gently pulled the stethoscope from Lucas’s chest and offered me a warm, reassuring nod.
“His lungs are clear, Sebastian,” Dr. Evans said in a hushed tone. “He is severely malnourished and dehydrated, and he has some mild frostbite on his toes, but there is no permanent tissue damage. He is a tough, resilient boy. With proper nutrition, warmth, and rest, he will make a complete physical recovery.”
Across the room, sitting on a massive velvet couch wrapped in three cashmere blankets, Emily was happily devouring a bowl of creamy potato soup, accompanied by a plate of warm, freshly baked sourdough rolls. Beside her, a private pediatric nurse was carefully brushing the knots out of her hair, applying soothing ointment to the minor cuts on her small hands.
Lucas was lying in a king-sized bed, wearing clean silk pajamas. He refused to let go of my left hand, his small fingers locked around my wrist with an iron grip even as his heavy eyelids fluttered with exhaustion.
“Daddy?” he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep.
“I’m right here, buddy,” I whispered, sitting on the edge of the mattress, gently stroking his soft chestnut hair with my free hand.
“Are you going to leave?”
“Never again,” I promised. “I am right here in the room. And when you wake up, Emily will be here, and we’re going to have pancakes with all the strawberries you can eat.”
A faint, peaceful smile touched Lucas’s lips. Within two minutes, the sound of his deep, steady breathing filled the room. For the first time in twelve months, my son was sleeping in absolute safety.
I slowly eased my hand from his grip, stood up, and walked over to where Emily was sitting on the couch.
I knelt down in front of her. The change in the little girl was already remarkable. The dirt and soot had been washed away, revealing a beautiful, bright face with warm amber eyes that sparkled in the lamplight.
“How are you feeling, Emily?” I asked gently.
She swallowed a bite of bread, looking down at the luxurious room with awe. “It’s like a castle, mister. I didn't know houses could be this high in the sky.”
“This is your home now, Emily,” I said with complete conviction. “As long as you want to stay here, you are safe. Nobody will ever hurt you again.”
Tears welled in her eyes, but this time they weren't tears of terror. They were tears of pure relief. “Thank you, Mr. Sebastian.”
“No,” I said, resting my hand gently on her shoulder. “Thank you. You gave me back my soul.”
I stood up, walked into the adjoining private study, and closed the heavy mahogany doors behind me.
Jackson Carter was waiting inside, leaning against a dark granite bar, sipping black coffee. Spread across the large glass conference table were classified financial printouts, encrypted communication logs, and surveillance photographs taken over the last forty-eight hours.
“Give me the full breakdown, Jackson,” I said, pouring myself a glass of scotch, my voice stripped of all emotion.
Jackson tapped the tablet screen, projecting the files onto the large wall monitor.
“It started fourteen months ago, Sebastian,” Jackson began, his tone analytical and cold. “Richard Vance knew that as long as you remained active CEO, you would never agree to sell NovaPay to the Apex Global Consortium. You built the company to be independent; Vance wanted a fast four-hundred-million-dollar exit so he could cover his massive personal debts with offshore gaming syndicates in Macau.”
I took a slow sip of the whiskey, feeling the burn in my throat. “So he used Victoria.”
“He exploited her,” Jackson corrected, displaying bank transfers. “Victoria was already unstable after your divorce. Vance approached her through a third-party intermediary, convincing her that you were preparing to file for sole custody and strip her of every dime. He offered her five million dollars in offshore untraceable bonds, private logistics, and a secluded safehouse in the northern suburbs of Chicago to disappear with Lucas.”
“Why keep them in Chicago?” I demanded, slamming my glass onto the table. “Why not send them to Europe?”
“Because keeping them local allowed Vance to control the timeline,” Jackson explained. “If Lucas was overseas, you might have flown to Europe, mobilized Interpol, and created an international incident that would pause the company's valuation. By keeping Victoria and Lucas hidden in a private residential compound in Lake Forest, Vance could manufacture false international leads to keep your private investigators chasing ghosts across the globe.”
Jackson pulled up another set of documents—court filings and corporate proxy authorizations.
“The plan was simple,” Jackson continued. “Vance knew that today was the one-year anniversary of Lucas’s disappearance. He predicted you would have an emotional collapse—which you did. Under NovaPay’s corporate bylaws, if the CEO is mentally incapacitated or absent from three consecutive board acquisition votes, the Vice-Chairman gains emergency proxy authority to execute the buyout.”
“And what about the raid on Saint Jude’s shelter?” I asked, my eyes narrowing. “How did Lucas end up on the street?”
Jackson’s face darkened with disgust. “Victoria lost her mind three weeks ago. The isolation, the guilt, the alcohol—she realized Vance was never going to give her the rest of the money. She tried to run from the Lake Forest house on foot with Lucas. She got as far as the south side before Vance’s fixers tracked her down. She managed to hide Lucas in the crowd near the bus station before they grabbed her. Lucas wandered into Saint Jude’s on his own.”
“Where is Victoria now?”
Jackson hesitated for a fraction of a second. “Vance’s security team is holding her in a private medical facility in Kenosha, pumping her full of sedatives to keep her quiet until the acquisition closes at midnight tonight.”
I stared at the wall monitor, watching the live stock ticker for NovaPay Group. The acquisition deadline was set for 11:59 PM. It was currently 8:45 PM.
Richard Vance was sitting in the NovaPay boardroom three blocks away, surrounded by corporate attorneys and foreign investors, preparing to sign away my life’s work while believing I was weeping alone in the Chicago rain.
He had stolen my son. He had driven my ex-wife to insanity. He had left a seven-year-old child to starve in an abandoned boiler room.
He thought he had won.
I set my empty glass down, walked over to the mahogany wardrobe in the corner of the study, and pulled out a fresh, custom-tailored charcoal suit, a crisp white shirt, and a deep crimson silk tie.
“Jackson,” I said calmly, unbuttoning my ruined cuffs.
“Sir?”
“How many armed tactical operatives do you have on standby in the city right now?”
“Forty-two men across three rapid-response teams,” Jackson replied without blinking. “All former Tier-One operators. Full tactical capability.”
“Good,” I said, slipping into the fresh shirt, fastening the silver cufflinks with surgical precision. “Have Team One secure the perimeter of this penthouse. If anyone unauthorized comes within fifty feet of this floor, eliminate them.”
“Understood. And Teams Two and Three?”
I tightened the crimson tie around my collar, pulled on the charcoal suit jacket, and looked at my reflection in the dark window glass. The broken, weeping man under the streetlamp was gone.
In his place stood a predator ready to dismantle an empire.

“Teams Two and Three are coming with me to the boardroom,” I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper. “It’s time to attend my meeting.”
(The narrative continues across the subsequent chapters as Sebastian, backed by Jackson Carter’s tactical team, descends upon the NovaPay boardroom to publicly confront and destroy Richard Vance, dismantle the corporate conspiracy, rescue Victoria from the illicit medical facility, and face the shadowy syndicate funding the entire operation. Through thrilling confrontations, legal warfare, and high-stakes drama, Sebastian systematically dismantles his enemies while protecting both Lucas and Emily.)
