Chapter 9 - THE SAFE HAVEN

I buried my face in Luca’s shoulder and sobbed.
The terror of the last forty-eight hours finally broke over me. I clung to his expensive suit, not caring that I was ruining it with tears and makeup.
He didn’t push me away. His large hand stroked my hair, his touch surprisingly gentle for a man who had just dismantled two lives without blinking.
"He's gone," Luca murmured against my ear. "He's never coming back. I promise you, Emma."
I pulled back slowly, wiping my face. "Vanessa..."
"Is packing her bags. A car is waiting to take her to the airport. She's dead to this family."
"Leo," I gasped, sudden panic seizing me again. "Where is he?"
Luca stood up and offered me his hand. "Come see."
I took his hand. He pulled me to my feet, and we walked up the stairs together.
The mansion was eerily quiet. The rehearsal dinner guests had been sent home early due to a "family emergency." The caterers were gone.
Luca led me to the east wing—the family wing, far away from the staff quarters.
He opened the door to the largest guest suite.
Inside, sitting in the middle of a massive four-poster bed, was Leo. He was surrounded by a pile of Legos, happily snapping pieces together while a cartoon played quietly on the flat-screen TV.
"Leo!" I cried, running into the room.
I scooped him up into a tight hug. He giggled, dropping a red Lego block.
"Aunt Emma! Look how big this bed is!"
"I see it, sweetie. I see it." I kissed his forehead, my heart finally settling into a normal rhythm.
I looked up at Luca, who was leaning against the doorframe, watching us with a soft expression I had never seen on him before.
"He can't stay in the staff quarters anymore," Luca said. "This room is his now. And the room next door is yours."
I froze. "Mine? Mr. Moretti, I... I'm a maid. I can't sleep in the guest wing."
"You're not a maid anymore, Emma."
Luca walked into the room. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the photograph of me and Sarah that he had shown me earlier. He handed it to me.
"I told you I knew Sarah," Luca said quietly, sitting on the edge of the bed. "What I didn't tell you was how. Seven years ago, when my father found out Marco was using Sarah to push drugs, he ordered Marco killed. The warehouse fire."
I stared at him, holding the photo.
"Marco survived," Luca continued. "But Sarah was terrified. She came to me. She was already pregnant. I gave her money. A lot of it. I told her to run, to get clean, and to give the baby a good life."
Tears welled in my eyes. "She tried. But the addiction... it was too strong. She spent the money on pills. We ended up on the street."
"I lost track of her," Luca said, his voice heavy with regret. "I tried to find her, but she disappeared. It wasn't until a year ago, when my private investigators finally located her death certificate, that I found out she had a sister who took the boy."
My jaw dropped. "You... you knew?"
"Why do you think Mrs. Carter hired you so quickly, Emma?" Luca smiled faintly. "Why do you think I let you work in my house? I brought you here to protect you. Both of you."
I covered my mouth, tears flowing freely now. "You knew I had Leo in the basement?"
"I knew for the last three weeks," Luca chuckled softly. "Chef Louis was very confused about why I suddenly started requesting extra chocolate muffins and chicken nuggets every night."
I laughed through my tears.
"I made a mistake with Vanessa," Luca said, his expression turning serious. "I let a business arrangement blind me to the kind of person she was. But I won't make a mistake with you."
He reached out and gently touched my bruised jaw.
"You are safe here, Emma. Leo is safe. This is your home now."
Leo looked up from his Legos. "Can we stay forever, Aunt Emma?"
I looked at the boy, then at the man who had risked his empire to save us.
"Yes, Leo," I whispered, smiling. "We can stay forever."
Everything felt perfect. The nightmare was over. We had a home.
But as Luca stood up to let us rest, a silver chain slipped from his pocket and fell onto the carpet with a soft clink.
I bent down to pick it up.
It was a necklace. A delicate silver chain with a small, crescent moon pendant.
My breath caught in my throat.
It was my mother's necklace. The one she had given Sarah before she died. The one Sarah had pawned years ago for drug money.

I looked up at Luca.
"How do you have this?" I asked, my voice trembling.
